Diabetes instructions for colonoscopy prep and procedure
These are general guidelines. Please call the health care provider who manages your diabetes for specific questions or concerns about medications.
For people with diabetes, any procedure the causes you to miss a meal or change your usual meal plan requires special planning to safely manage your blood glucose levels. The bowel prep has no substantial carbohydrates it is a balanced electrolyte solution.
Insulin and diabetes pills: If you are a diabetic it is important to monitor your blood sugar while doing the bowel preparation. In general you should only take half of your usual dose of insulin or pills on the day of the prep (the day before the procedure). You should not take any diabetic medications on the day of the procedure. Please be sure to check your blood sugar at home at all meals, at bedtime and on the morning of your exam. You should always check with your healthcare provider who manages your diabetes medication
Please use the following tips prior to your colonoscopy exam:
We will attempt to schedule the appointment for you as early as possible in the day (usually the first or second case) so that you can eat immediately afterwards and take your diabetic medication as close to your usual time as possible.
Check your blood glucose level before all meals and at bedtime on the preparation day and on the day of the procedure.
Check a blood glucose if at any time you have symptoms of low blood sugar or high blood sugar.
Pay close attention to the carbohydrate content when choosing clear liquid foods. You want to make sure you do not choose all diet (zero/no carbohydrates) preparations as these types of liquids will have no carbohydrates and may lower your blood sugar, alternatively you do not want to choose all high sugar items (high carbohydrate) this may cause your blood sugar to be high.
