Build Captain Responsibilities and Hints for the Build Day

Thank you for volunteering to be a Build Captain. Your role is incredibly important to the success of the Build Day. There are too many volunteers for just a few KaBOOM! folks to manage. By having Build Captains we improve the experience of the build for all involved. Your role is key!

Here are some basics of what to expect:

o You will likely be assigned 10-20 volunteers (maybe up to 50).

o Your team will be together through at least the beginning of the build.

o As the build gets rolling, some teams will finish their work and be reassigned. This is normal. It is planned to happen this way.

o It is normal for there to be a bit of lag time in the process. Don’t be shy of letting your team members take a break or helping them find some other things to do.

o When the building process is stalled, keep your team working. Look around for other jobs that need help. Could the mulch team use them? Did you clean up and take the cardboard and trash to where it needs to go. What did you do with the tools and leftover hardware and bucket? Are you helping to make the job easier for everyone. Or just take a break together and practice make up a cheer or song to motivate or jibe other teams!

So what will be expected of all Build Captains on the big day?

Here are some of your responsibilities:

o Leader - Bottom line, we are looking for leadership for your team. That’s why you got the job! Manage your team closely. Remain with them for the day.

o Informer - Know the big picture. Know where the bathrooms are. Know where first-aid is. Know what’s for lunch, when lunch will be and if there are vegetarian meals. Know what time the day is expected to end and how. Know who the KaBOOM! staff members are and who the playground installer is.

o Host - Start the day off by circling up your team. Introduce yourself and let everyone go around and introduce themselves. Keep them having fun and talking all day.

o Team Builder - Encourage your team to work together. Get some spirit going. Come up with a team chant or song. Start friendly competition with other teams. Set goals and cheer people on.

o Communicator - Try to answer questions to the best of your knowledge and personal judgment. If truly stumped, channel communication and questions to the appropriate person. And practice patience!

o Safety Monitors - Think about what safety hazards exist in your work area. Pay special attention to improper use or handling of tools. Make sure your team members take rest and water breaks. Let the KaBOOM! staff and the Build Day Safety Team know if any accidents take place. Take frequent breaks and drink water!

Things to remember:

o The build will happen in one day, but we need to keep the volunteers there.

o Part of our philosophy is that team building will happen as a result of the day, we don’t want it to be TOO easy, but we want to help provide guidance. The team will work together to figure it out and make it happen, that’s part of the plan to help them team build.

o We do what we do, because we believe it is important for kids to have fun and to play, we believe it is a right.
