Lesson 22: Creating Graphs from Excel Data

Creating LINE Graphs in Excel

Creating a graph from Excel data is easy. Graphs created using Excel look great and are very functional. Excel allows you to place your raw data and your chart on the same page. Before printing the sheet, make sure you do a print preview first. The print preview gives you an idea about how much space is used on the sheet and you can manipulate the size of the graph using the graph's sizing handles to maximize the amount of space used on the sheet.

To create a graph in Excel, do the following:

1. Enter your data (remember to widen your columns!)

WE will be comparing the following …

• The average daily temperature of 3 cities

o Your 1st city will be PEABODY, MA

o Your 2nd city will also be from the northern hemisphere, but outside of the United States.

o Your 3rd city should be from the southern hemisphere.

EXAMPLE:

I compared a 24hour AVERAGE temperature in degrees F between 3 cities. Please choose Peabody, MA (Essex County), 1 from the Northern Hemisphere (city and country), and 1 from the Southern Hemisphere. (city and country),

2. Highlight all the information EXCLUDING the TITLES and the TOTALS at the bottom of the column!

(Don’t worry that January is still white…it is selected.)

3. Click the chart wizard button.

4. Select the line graph and click next.

5. CLICK on SERIES TAB. Name all 3 SERIES by the city they represent in your line graph. CLICK NEXT.

For example, the BLUE line represents PEABODY, MA.

6. Label the chart title, x-axis and y-axis. Click next.

7. Click AS A NEW SHEET and then finish.

8. Resize your graph using the sizing handles in corner

Right click background and change colors, fonts and use fill effects to improve your graph.

9. Click on the print preview button to see how your new graph fits on the page. Adjust the size accordingly using the sizing handles.
