* Know how to read the periodic table – be able to tell me the following:

• How many protons, neutrons and electrons an element has

• Know the atomic mass and atomic number of each element

* Know the chemical names and symbols for elements #1 – 36.

* Know all the vocabulary from Ch 1

(Be sure to study Ions and Isotopes)

* Be able to draw the electron orbit structure for any element!!

* Know the properties of the various sections of the periodic table

• Reactive metals

• Transition metals

• Rare Earth elements

• Halogens

• Noble gases

• Metalloids

* Know the trends in the periodic table (density increases from top to bottom and is most dense at the ends of the table, etc)

* Radioactivity (what is it? How does it affect atoms of elements? Etc..)

Chapter 1:

Periodic Table

• Memorize elements #1-36

• Be able to identify trends in the table (size, density, etc)

• Know characteristics of alkaline, alkali, rare earth elements, transition metals, halogens, noble gases, metalloids, metals, nonmetals, etc (Section 1.3)

• Identify number of protons, neutrons, and electrons for elements using table

• Who created the first periodic table?

• Group/Period

Atomic Structure

• Know where electrons, protons, and neutrons are located and their charges

• What is the identifying factor in an atom?

• Electron shells – how many electrons does each shell hold?

• Be able to correctly place electrons on an electron shell diagram for a specific element

Half-life/Radioactivity

• What is half-life?

• Be able to tell how much of a sample is left after a certain number of half-lives has passed

• How can one atom change to an atom of a different element?

• Explain what radioactivity is
