Accessing LASER: Tips and Suggestions are many ways to access data in LASER. By registering as an analyst and configuring your dashboard, data you want to view quickly are available in data sections known as “Widgets.” The dashboard can be configured to display only the Widgets you want as well as to arrange the layout so more important statistics higher on the screen.Minimize or remove a widget by clicking the (–) or the (X) in the corners of the widget.Restore dashboard widgets by clicking “Configure Dashboard Widgets” at the bottom of the page.Tip: If you can’t see “Configure Dashboard Widgets” at the bottom of the screen, check to see if you are logged in.My LMI Dashboard Example:Configuring WidgetsEach widget can be customized to show a single statistic or multiple statistics for areas, industries, and occupations. If multiple selections exist within a widget, the widget will scroll through the selections.To configure a widget, click the Configure link at the bottom of the widget. The widget will cycle through your selections when you are on the page. You can also click on a number to manually view your selections.Current Data AnalysisData ProfilesProfiles are an easy way view the most utilized statistics for an area, industry, or occupation in one location. Data from profiles can be an initial look at statistics you would like to research further. Profiles include data visualizations in Charts, Graphs, and Maps. Profiles can be quickly printed and provided to customers looking for information. Profiles can be customized to show specifically requested data for customers.Profiles are available in the Services Preview section in the middle of the screen.Research a Labor Market Area can provide an area profile.Advertised jobs and employers in the areaUnemploymentEmployment – Current and projected, by industry and occupationDemographics and indicatorsResearch an Occupation can provide an occupation profile.Advertised jobs for the occupation including supply and demandEducation and work requirementsWagesEmployment – Current and projected, by area and industryResearch an Industry can provide an industry profile.Advertised jobsWagesEmployment – Current and projected, by area and occupationProfiles are available under Current Data Analysis in the left-hand navigation.Area ProfilesArea Profiles are available for the State, Counties, MSA’s, and WIA’s.County data are available for all statistics. In these cases, data will be shown for the next largest geography. Tip: To see which data are available for which geographies, read our cheat sheet in “Understanding the Data” under publications in LASER.Important Note: Each section describes the data shown in the tables. The text includes information for: When data being displayed is for the next largest geography.The time frame for which data are displayed.Whether data are seasonally adjusted or not seasonally adjusted.Advertised jobs data available:Current Jobs Available are as of the previous day.Number of Unemployed Per Job Opening will display the most current month available since unemployed is measured monthly through the LAUS program.Each section has the option to view historic jobs data. This can also be accessed through the historic data analysis menu.Employer Data (Advertised Jobs):Employer data accessed through the area profile provide employers by job openings, or advertised jobs. Tip: Use the employer profile option under Current Data Analysis to get a list of employers in the area. Display OptionsDisplay options are available within each profile summary to choose which data categories are displayed, how items are displayed, and if maps and graphs are displayed. Here are the options for an Area Profile:Maps and GraphsMaps and graphs are available for most statistics in LASER. Maps will display distribution information among the geographic area chosen to display. Graphs will display statistics from the table. When there are multiple statistics in the table, options are available to change the statistic being graphed.The CES graph has a new option to view detail within a sector when details are available. The employer profile has information by Zip Code, MSA, WIA region and the State.Data are supplied by Infogroup under contract with the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.Data are provided by lists of 50 employers at a time with a set amount of results returned to ensure that data are being used for the purposes of job hunting and LMI.Suggestion: The employer size range should be changed to get results for a larger geographic area. 10312400Tip: Employers Posting Jobs has an option that is very useful when looking for employer information in an area. To view a list of employers in the area with the most jobs openings, scroll down in search options to view the Top 25, Top 50, Top 75, or Top 100.Specific DataData profiles can contain so many statistics that it’s overwhelming. “Specific data” under Current Data Analysis provides the capability to view one data topic at a time. Another option is to select the Details option from the profile tabs.
