Drawing and Painting 1

You will be creating a painting of your own choice of subject. The subject of the painting is extremely important to the success of the painting. You will bring in clear images to paint from. Bring in several choices. I will approve your final choice. You will need to purchase a 16” x 20” canvas to paint on. Due_____.

When deciding about what to paint think about:

Subject matter: figure/portrait, architecture, landscape, still life, etc.

Composition: Pick and interesting set up. You want to think about the principles of design when choosing an image.

Clarity: Make sure your image is clear with true colors.

Difficulty: You want to challenge yourself, but also know your limitations.

Creativity: Look at other artist’s painting that interest you. What do you like about their artwork? Is it the subject matter, style/technique of painting, color, etc.? Bring in some examples of other artist’s work (past and present) that inspire you that you can tape up while you work.

Step 1 DUE:

Begin researching artists and pick a few that catch your attention. You can do this research using the internet or looking through books. You can be inspired by past artists in history or present day artists. Print out in color the artist’s work and jot down next to the images some information bout the artist and what you like about his/her work. What would you like to include in your artwork that inspired you from their artwork? It could be composition, use of color, use of brushwork, etc. Use 3 pages in your sketchbook for this part of the assignment.

Step 2 DUE:

You will need to collect photo reference for your painting. You may take your own pictures and/or combine images you’ve found online. Hint: If you print out your image from the computer, you may want to print out a black and white version to see the value break down.

Bring in canvas min. 16 x 20.

Bring in shallow Tupperware container to keep paint.

Step 3 in class:

Prime canvas with a gray gesso coating. Sketch image using white charcoal pencil or regular pencil and fix. Or you may paint image on without sketching it out first. Begin painting.
