Abstract

This short ebook is about...

This ebook is a template that is designed for people to produce and publish short ebooks on

After publishing, Smashwords will distribute your ebook to Apple ibooks, , and many other retailers all over the world. This is an easy method for quick distribution of your ebook.

ONLY ALTER THE RED TEXT AREAS, AND THOSE MARKED AS OPTIONAL The file will be saved as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx). THE TEXT MUST BE CHANGED TO BLACK.

For pictures that are inserted into the document when using OpenOffice: Right click on the picture and “Anchor” to “Paragraph.”

Using Microsoft Word: Right mouse click on each image, click 'format picture', then click 'Layout', then click 'In Line With Text', then click 'save'. This will prevent your image from floating. Floating images cause unpredictable results in ebooks.

Smashwords has many formatting rules that must be followed to publish an ebook. These rules and formatting are generally designed for someone to publish a fictional novel. However, for many people, this is not the intended genre or format. But the rules are the same. If you want to change the bookmarks for Chapters, then you will need to read the rules and formating guidelines at

Do not number the pages – Smashwords program will do that. A cover image is required, and that can be made using OpenOffice (available for free at ) presentation program. You can also use Microsoft Powerpoint to do this. Use the SNIPPING TOOL to capture the image in low resolution, and save it to your computer. Place this cover image as shown on page 1. You will then use the software program GIMP (available for free at ) to make a high resolution image – which will be the cover. Open GIMP, and use the command “Image” then “Scale” to enlarge the image file to a minimum of 1600 pixels wide. Save the file by using the “File” and “Export” command. You will need to upload 2 things for Smashwords – the high-resolution cover image and the document file.

Alternate method for creating a cover image: & kdp.

will make a cover image for you, if you publish the ebook on their web site. To do this, you only need the .doc file.

Smashwords will issue a free ISBN number, if you want it. It is recommended that you obtain this ISBN number after your initial publication, and then upload a revision that has included the newly-issued ISBN number, as shown in the red text on the first page, above.

You can upload any number of revisions.

Congratulations! You just published your first ebook.

Here is a blank cover that you can import into the OpenOffice presentation program to make your cover.
