Middle of Book Assignment

This assignment will focus on strengthening your understanding of characterization. In addition, you will practice providing textual proof to support your ideas, learn how to cite primary sources, and create a bibliography citation.

DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions about the biography or autobiography you are reading. Please follow all MLA formatting rules. Do not answer the questions in “question-answer” mode; write well-written paragraphs. Leave the subheadings (bolded below). Refer to the Writing Pitfalls handout before printing and proof-read your work by reading it out loud. Remember that your paper should be double spaced throughout (not 2.8—watch the default setting!)

Book title (italicize the title):

Author:

Number of pages in the book:

Number of pages you have read so far:

Direct Quotation: Choose one adjective that describes a characteristic of the subject (person) of your autobiography or biography. Explain why you chose that adjective by showing how that person displays that characteristic. Be specific and provide a specific example of that characteristic from the reading. You must offer textual proof in the form of a direct quotation to support your opinion. Pick a quote that is substantial and displays more than a restatement of your idea. Frame the quotation within your writing; do not start or end your paragraph with the quotation. Cite the quotation using MLA parenthetical citation format. (See "How to Cite Source Material: Parenthetical Citation" on the website.) Please remember that when we are referring to an author or the subject of a book, we use last names not first names only.

Paraphrase: Choose another adjective that describes a second characteristic of the subject (person) of your autobiography or biography. Explain why you chose that adjective by showing how that person displays that characteristic. Be specific. You must offer textual proof in the form of a paraphrase of a specific situation from the book that proves your point. Cite the paraphrase using MLA parenthetical citation format. (See "How to Cite Source Material: Parenthetical Citation" on the website.) Remember that we use two quotation marks not one.

Framed Quotation: Choose one quote from the middle of the book and explain why this quote represents the book so far. Pick a quote that is substantial and displays more than just a restatement of your idea. Frame the quotation within your writing; do not start or end your paragraph with the quotation. Cite the quotation using MLA parenthetical citation format. (See "How to Cite Source Material: Parenthetical Citation" on the website.)

Personal Connection: What do you think of this person so far? Have you changed your opinion of this person since the beginning of the book? Why or why not? If the book is holding your interest, explain how? If the book is not holding your interest, explain why not. Please do not just rephrase these questions in your answers: “I have not changed my opinion of Walt Disney,” or “I’m interested in the book because it flows.” My goal is to get you thinking about your word choice. What does “flow” even mean? How would “flow” make the book more interesting? Your answers should be thoughtful.

Continued on back…

Bibliography: Format a bibliography citation for the book. You do not need a separate page for the bibliography citation; skip a line after your last sentence and center the word “Bibliography” (without the quotation marks). The citation goes underneath. You are still double spacing only. Use the attachment on the website, “How to format a Bibliography.” Follow formatting instructions carefully.

Reminders:

• Do not use the pronoun “I” except in the Personal Connection paragraph.

• Do not use the pronoun “you” anywhere in this assignment.

• Use “two” quotation marks not ‘one.’

• The period goes outside the citation parenthesis (A comma or period is inside quotation marks when there is no citation).

• Double space only—check that default setting.

• Refer to an author or the character of the book by full names or last names only. Do not use first names only.

• Leave all the subheadings (Book title, Author, Direct Quotation, etc.)

• Read the Writing Pitfalls handout before you print!

• Read the rubric before you print.

• PROOFREAD YOUR WORK OUTLOUD!
