• Specials: We are on a 6-Day schedule. I will post the schedule to my website and in class. Please make sure students are especially prepared for P.E. and Library days.

• We will be collaborating as a fifth grade team. The fifth grade teachers work closely in helping your child receive the best possible education.

Attendance & Lunch Count

Attendance and lunch count are taken first thing each morning. Please make sure that students are arriving to school on-time, 7:50 A.M. A student will be considered tardy after 8:00 A.M. and must have a tardy slip filled out by the front office staff in order to enter the classroom. Note that as per CCSD policy, 3 tardies will equal 1 absence. If a student is absent, an absent note MUST be given to Ms. Nay within 3 days of any absence, otherwise the absence is unexcused. If you are aware of an upcoming absence, please notify Ms. Nay in advance, so that she may make preparations.

Student Agenda

Students will be responsible for maintaining their student agendas. The first day of the week they will be expected to record the objective and homework assignment for each subject. Parents will need to initial the agenda on that day. Ms. Nay will check the agendas on the following day of the week. Students will only receive full credit if the agendas are completely and properly filled out, including parent initials.

Behavioral Expectations

In order for us to ensure that each student receives a quality education, it is the expectation that all students behave in a way that is conducive to learning at all times and to come to school on time and prepared to learn each day. With the support of our parents, we know that this is an obtainable goal for all. We have 5 simple rules plus a Diamond Rule.

They are as follows:

1. Follow Directions Quickly

2. Raise your hand for permission to speak

3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat

4. Make SMART choices

5. Keep your dear teacher happy!

And the Diamond rule is to Keep Your EYES on the Target!

Behavioral System

Teacher and students will develop our classroom social contract, together.

Failure to follow the class expectations will lead to consequences suited to match the behavior. I am a firm believer in student accountability. Continuous infractions can lead to a Stop and Think, Phone call home, Parent/Teacher meeting, and a Behavior Plan.

Positive Behavior Awards

Students who show wonderful character can earn points for their team. They can work toward becoming a classroom leader, with additional responsibilities and privileges. Students that continually follow our social contract and class rules will be given opportunities for classroom extras like computer time, game time, and choice times.

For those students who are able to consistently adhere to the grade level expectations, additional rewards may be earned. They include:

➢ Verbal Positive Reinforcement

➢ Team Points

➢ Participation in extra activities

➢ Student of the Week

Assignments and Make-up Policy

Assignments are due at the time and day specified. NO EXCEPTIONS! Students are responsible for asking questions if confused and for completing all assignments in a clear, neat, and concise manner.

Students are required to make-up any absent work. Any and all missing assignments are due three days from returning from an absence and/or three days from being assigned. An exception to this would be if a due date is issued two or more weeks in advance. In that case, if the student is absent on the day a project is due, the project will be due on the day the student returns to school or make arrangements to turn it in before the absence.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that ALL assignments are turned in on time. If a student does not turn an assignment in on the assigned day, they will receive a 20% penalty for each day after, for up to 3 days. Assignments will NOT be accepted if turned in after three days of the due date. For example, if an assignment is due on the 20th and the student tries to turn it in on the 24th, it will not be accepted and the student will receive an F for that assignment.

It is the student’s responsibility to review the work, if need be, with the teacher to check for understanding. I understand that there may be emergencies in which assignments are not able to be turned in on time. Such emergencies will be handled on a case by case basis. Students with an IEP will be given additional time according to their specific accommodations.

Grades

Grades will be uploaded to ParentLink every Friday and will post to parents 24 hours later. It is important that parents continue to check ParentLink so that one can see up-to-date information regarding student work, assignments, tests, projects…etc. ParentLink passwords are available with an appointment with administration. Students will receive a progress report every two weeks and parents can also print a copy from ParentLink. It is expected that the progress reports are signed and returned the following day. Students will also receive an unsatisfactory progress report once a semester.

Assignments

I would like all students to receive the credit that they deserve for the time and effort that they have put into their assignments. However, it is impossible to credit a student for work completed if there is no name on the paper. To ensure that credit is given for completed work, it is vital that a full heading (name, date, assignment title, and page number) is placed on each paper turned in. Work submitted without a name will not receive credit and will be thrown away.

All work must be done in pencil.

Academic Dishonesty

When a student submits work, it is assumed that the work is the product of the student solely and any assistance received on the work was an honest attempt to help in the learning process. When resources (books, internet, etc.) are used on assignments, it is also assumed that they were used to help the student acquire information needed to complete the assignment. Submission or presentation of work, in any form, that is not a student’s own, is prohibited. This can be as simple as keeping your paper uncovered during a test so that a friend can copy the answers or loan/borrow homework answers before school. It is NEVER acceptable to get or give answers to another student unless done in the act of students working together on an assignment with the teacher’s knowledge and both people are putting in an equal amount of effort. Academic dishonesty will result in the student filling out a Stop and Think, a call home to the parent(s), and also the teacher notifying administration about the incident. At this time, it will be the collaboration of the teacher, parent, and administration as to what the student’s grade will be on the assignment.

Address/Phone Numbers

Please make sure that Ms. Nay, as well as the office, has your current address and phone number on file. If emergencies arise at school, we need to be able to contact you as quick as possible.

Teacher Communication

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. If the situation requires a meeting involving the teacher and/or administration, a meeting will be scheduled.

The quickest way to get feedback would be via email.

2016-2017 Supply List

Although it is not required, all students are encouraged to obtain the standard supplies. The list for supplies can be found in the front office. Please check your child’s supplies regularly and refresh them throughout the year as needed. Please note that supplies will be left in the classroom community, at the teacher’s discretion. Students may want to keep additional supplies at home for home projects.

***The Clark County School District provides necessary supplies for all students in order to meet their educational needs. The supplies list is just a suggested list. It is not a mandatory list. Should you decide to purchase, the 5th grade list of items would be appropriate for your child’s grade level.

*Revisions of 5th grade policies and expectations may be modified at Ms. Nay and/or Administrations’ discretion based on student needs.

(Please complete the following three pages and return)

I have read the expectations and discussed them with my child.

I understand what is expected of my child and me.
