Reducing Photo Size for website or emailing

To reduce the file size of a photograph or an image we usually use a Graphics Program.

There are many Graphics Programs available on the market, used for modifying and editing images but if all we want to do is reduce the file size for the purpose of emailing, we can use a very basic program known as ‘Paint’ which comes as standard with all Windows systems.

You will usually find ‘Paint’ in the Start Menu – All Programs – Accessories – Paint.

Open your image file just as you would any other document, from the File menu – Open and use the dialog box that appears to locate the file.

You should now see your image in the main area of Paints window. Don’t worry if you can only see part of the image, some large images will be bigger than the screen area. (You can always use the scroll bars if you wish).

Now from the menu bar, click on Image and then on Stretch/Skew from the drop down menu. Note Vista and Windows 7 users will have a Resize button on the toolbar instead.

The following dialog box will appear.

Change the Horizontal and Vertical sizes associated with Stretch to about 60% and click OK. That’s it!

Now REMEMBER to use the ‘save as’ option from the File menu and give the file a new name so as not to over write the original file.

This new file will be considerably smaller than the original and will not be as high quality. This however will not be noticeable when viewing on the computer and so makes it ideal for websites and emailing.

The original file which will still be of a higher quality can be used for printing purposes.
