DESCRIPTION:

This continuing education activity will provide health care professionals a review of current guidelines for the selection of medications for the elderly population, along with a better understanding of strategies to improve medication regimens to reduce the potential for patient harm.

PARTICIPANTS AND OBJECTIVES

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Pharmacists, Physicians, Physicians Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Identify factors associated with & consequences of polypharmacy in older adults.

2. Review best practices for taking a full medication history.

3. Discuss strategies to reduce polypharmacy, including the Beers Criteria.

4. Highlight updates made in the 2012 Beers Criteria.

5. Identify strategies for treating geriatric patients without the use of Beers Criteria

medications.
