Courtney O’Connor

TIME NEEDED:

45 minutes

NATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS

Standard 1 – Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.

OBJECTIVES

1. Students will identify the different categories of over the counter drugs.

2. Students will identify what each category does for the body.

3. Students will understand the pros and cons of each OTC drug.

MATERIALS & PREPARATION

1. Duplicate the "I am… Who is…" sheet and cut the phrases apart for distribution.

2. Powerpoint with OTC drug picture and categories

3. OTC review worksheet - 1 copy for each student.

PROCEDURES

1. Students will start with a Do-Now: Name all of the things that are found in your medicine cabinet at home. Students will hold on to their papers for a discussion at the end of class.

2. Ask the class if they know what Over-the-Counter or OTC drugs are? Solicit responses from the class.

3. If students can explain what OTC drugs are, ask them if they can name some of the products they know of. If they do not know what OTC drugs are, explain that they are self-care products that can be purchased by any consumer at a store like a supermarket, drug store, etc. Give some examples of OTC products. (advil, sunscreen, cortisone, deodorant)

4. Explain to the class that they are going to play an activity where they have to identify the different categories of OTC drugs and what each of them do. The game is a little bit different than "I am… Who is."

5. Each student will receive a slip of paper with a statement on it. The statement will read "I am… (a purpose for a specific OTC drug) ~ These statements will match up with a picture of a drug that will be presented on the screen. Read an example from a slip that will be distributed.

6. The object of the game is for each student to identify the picture that corresponds to his or her statement. The student in the class who thinks s/he has the matching OTC purpose, will stand up and read his/her "I am…" statement. If the phrase and the term are a match, the next slide will describe that drug, its category and its purpose.

7. If the student who stands up is not actually the appropriate match, the teacher will intervene, ask the student to sit down and ask the other students in the class if anyone else thinks they might be a match. Teacher will also give clues to help lead the students.

8. The game continues until each student has read their I am statement.

9. Worksheets will be handed out before the activity with each drug category. As information is displayed on the screen and discussed with the class, each student will write different types of drugs or brands that go into that category.

10. Teacher will review the categories and OTC drugs with the class after each student has shared their statement.

CONCLUSION:

Teacher will discuss the different categories and purposes of OTC drugs. Teacher will use the DO-NOW to fuel discussion, by asking which of these drugs each student has. Teacher will introduce the idea that it is important to know the purpose of each drug, and that taking more than one, or too much of one can be detrimental to someone’s health.

If needed, teacher will begin to talk about Prescription drugs and the difference between Prescription and OTC drugs.
