I’m Trapped
Your house is connected to the Public Sewer System by a sewer service lateral. This necessary link allows for the proper disposal of the sewage (wastewater) from your home. Often, your privately owned sewer lateral becomes damaged by root intrusion or utility excavations. Any sewer blockage may cause future sewer backups into your basement. An important component of your service lateral is a “trap.” This U-shaped section of sewer traps water, stopping harmful sewer gases from entering your house. This sewer gas is generated naturally in the public sewer system. Your internal house plumbing also safeguards against harmful sewer gases by a series of internal house traps on the various fixtures within your home. This internal plumbing system is also vented through your roof to relieve back pressure. The routine maintenance of your service lateral and traps is an important step toward ensuring a safe “flush.”
Please contact your public sewer utility or local registered plumber for assistance.
