HowdoesSafeAssignWork? SafeAssigncanbeusedintwoways:

InstructorscansetupSafeAssignmentsintheirBlackboardcoursesandletstudentssubmit paperstotheseassignments,inawayverysimilartotheoneprovidedcurrentlybyBlackboard LearningSystem.Asstudentssubmitpapers,theyarecheckedagainstSafeAssign's comprehensivedatabasesofsourcematerial.Thepaperswillthenbedeliveredtoinstructors throughtheBlackboardLearningSystemtogetherwiththeoriginalityreports,withtheresultsof thematchingprocess,attachedtothem. 2. InstructorsmayuploadpapersdirectlywiththeDirectSubmitfeature,withoutstudent involvement.

? SafeAssignisonlyavailablethroughaBlackboardcourseshell.Youmusthaveattended instructorBlackboardtraininginordertohaveaccesstoBlackboard. ? AccordingtoNLUpolicy,youmustnotifystudentsofyourplanstouseSafeAssign-particularlyif youuseDirectSubmit.IfyouintendtouseSafeAssign,youshouldaddinformationaboutthe toolandaboutplagiarismtoyoursyllabus. ? CreatingaSafeAssignment

Overview

SafeAssignmentsappearincoursesasanewcontenttypeandcanbeaddedtoanycoursecontentarea. SafeAssignmentsfunctionliketheexistingAssignmentcontenttypewiththeaddedlayerofaplagiarism detectioncheckoncepapersaresubmitted. PleasenotethatSafeAssignmentsaredifferentfromAssignmentsandthereisnoconnectionbetween thecontenttypes.ItisnotpossibletomakeanexistingAssignmentaSafeAssignmentwithoutstarting fromthebeginning.LikeregularAssignments,however,SafeAssignmentsareintegratedwiththe GradebookinCE/VistaEnterprise,version4.2.2.andhigher.

CreateaSafeAssignment

BeforeSafeAssignorDirectSubmitcanbeusedinasection,aContentLinkmustbecreatedforeach. PLEASENOTE:thisisatwo-stepprocess.YoumustfirstaddtheContentLinkfromtheBuildtab. Second,youcreatetheactualSafeAssignmentfromtheTeachtab.

Creating a SafeAssign Content Link

UsingDirectSubmit

Overview

DirectSubmitgeneratesSafeAssignreportsonpaperssubmitted outsideofaSafeAssignment. PLEASENOTE:PapersuploadedthroughDirectSubmitareonly addedtotheInstitutionalDatabase-thereisnooptiontoaddthem totheGlobalReferenceDatabasesincestudentshavetoopt-inona paper-by-paperbasis.Additionally,thereisnoGradebook integrationwithpaperssubmittedthroughDirectSubmit.So becauseDirectSubmitdoesnotofferaccesstotheGlobalReference DatabaseorintegrationwithGradebook,instructorsshouldsetup anduseSafeAssignmentstocollectsubmissionswheneverpossible. DirectSubmitallowsInstructorstosubmitpapersoneatatimeorseveralatoncebyincludingthemina .ZIPfile..ZIPpackagesshouldcontainnomorethan100papersandsubmittingmorethan300papersin

SubmitPapersthroughDirectSubmit

Create a Direct Submit Content Link

FollowthesestepstosubmitpapersthroughDirectSubmit.

1. ClicktheBuildtab 2. Onyourcoursehomepage,chooseAddContentLink,DirectSubmit,CreateDirectSubmit 3. AssignaTitletotheDirectSubmitinstance HowtoHideDirectSubmitContentLink 1. FromtheTeachview,clickonthedownarrownexttotheDirectSubmitcontentlink 2. Select"HideItem" ThiswillhidetheDirectSubmitconsolefromthestudentsinthecourse.

Submit through Direct Submit

1. FromtheTeachview,clickontheDirectSubmitcontent link (ThisbringsyoutoyourDirectSubmitdropboxorconsole.)

2. Ifyouhavealreadyuploadedpapers,alistoffoldersand paperswillappear.Thislistincludespapersalready uploadedthroughDirectSubmit.Itisnotrecommended thatfilesbedeletedfromDirectSubmit,asthiswillremove themfromtheinstitutionaldatabaseofexistingmaterials.

3. Navigatetoafolderorcreateanewfolderwherethepaperorpaperswillbeuploaded.Note: PapersaddedtofoldersinthePrivatetabareonlyviewablebyyou,theinstructor.Papersadded tofoldersintheSharedtabareviewablebyanyonewitharoleaboveastudentinthecourse- soTAs,additionalinstructors,etc.

4. ClickSubmitPapers. 5. SelectUploadFileandbrowseforthefile.Individualpapersaswellaspapersthataregrouped

ina.ZIPpackageareaccepted.Alternatively,selectCopy/PasteDocumentandaddthe documenttextinthefield. 6. Selecttheuploadoptions: SubmitasDraft:ASafeAssignreportwillbegeneratedhoweverthepaperwillnotbeaddedto theinstitutionaldatabaseandwillnotbeusedtocheckotherpapers. SkipPlagiarismChecking:Addsthepaperstotheinstitutionaldatabasewithoutcheckingfor contentcopiedfromothersources.ThisisusefulifanInstructorwantstouploadpapersfroman earliercoursetoensurethatcurrentstudentsarenotreusingwork.

SafeAssignOriginalityReports

Overview

SafeAssignOriginalityReportsprovidedetailedinformationaboutthematchesfoundbetweena submittedpaperandexistingsources.TheSafeAssignreportidentifiesallmatchingblocksoftext.Itis theresponsibilityoftheteacherandstudenttoinvestigatewhetherthematchingtextisproperly referencedornot.Detailingeverymatchpreventsdetectionerrorsduetodifferencesinciting standards.

Reportlayout

SafeAssignreportsaredividedintothreesections:

ReportInformation:Thissectionlistsdataaboutthepaper,suchastheauthor,percent Matching,andwhenitwassubmitted.Thissectionalsoincludesoptionsfordownloadingthe report,emailingthereport,orviewingaprintableversion.Notethattheprintableversionmay bethemosteffectiveviewofthereportforthoseusersthatrelyonassistivetechnologiesto accesstheBlackboardLearningSystem.
