The Coleman Report
Coleman (1966) investigated both parental influence (0-100) and school influence (0-100) on student achievement (percent on a standardized test). Conduct both a simultaneous regression and hierarchical regression analysis.
Questions:
In the simultaneous regression analysis:
1) How much of the ACHIEVE variance is “explained” by PARENT’S & SCHOOL’S INFLUENCE?
2) Does PARENT explain a significant portion of ACHIEVE beyond SCHOOL? YES/NO. How do you Know?
3) Does SCHOOL explain a significant portion of ACHIEVE beyond PARENT? YES/NO. How do you Know?
4) How much of the variance does PARENT’S uniquely explain?
5) What is the amount of shared variance?
In the Hierarchical Regression Analysis:
6) How much of the variance in ACHIEVE is “explained” by SCHOOL? Is it Significant?
7) How much MORE of the variance is “explained” by PARENT’S (Beyond what school explained)?
8) How much of the variance is “explained” by both IVs? Is it statistically significant?
9) Is there any difference in the amount of explained variance between the Simultaneous and the Hierarchical analyses? YES/NO. Why are Why Not?
10) What is the amount of shared variance?
ANSWERS:
In the simultaneous regression analysis:
1) How much of the ACHIEVE variance is “explained” by PARENT’S & SCHOOL’S INFLUENCE? 60.3%
2) Does PARENT explain a significant portion of ACHIEVE beyond SCHOOL? YES/NO. How do you Know? YES as indicated by the statistically significant t –test, p < .001.
3) Does SCHOOL explain a significant portion of ACHIEVE beyond PARENT? YES/NO. How do you Know? NO as indicated by the non-statistically significant t –test, p =.122.
4) How much of the variance does PARENT’S uniquely explain?
.6272 = 39.31%
5) What is the amount of shared variance?
.603 - (.0972 + .6272) = .603 – (.009 + .393) = .603 – .394 = .209 shared variance.
In the Hierarchical Regression Analysis:
6) How much of the variance in ACHIEVE is “explained” by SCHOOL? Is it Significant?
.210 and it is statistically significant, p < .001.
7) How much MORE of the variance is “explained” by PARENT’S (Beyond what school explained)? .393 and it is statistically significant, p < .001.
8) How much of the variance is “explained” by both IVs? Is it statistically significant?
60.3% and it is statistically significant, p < .001.
9) Is there any difference in the amount of explained variance between the Simultaneous and the Hierarchical analyses? YES/NO. Why are Why Not?
There are no differences in the amount of explained variance.
10) What is the amount of shared variance?
There is no longer any shared variance, the shared variance in the simultaneous analysis has been assigned to the SCHOOL’S influence.
