Engagement Ideas for Whole Class

INSTRUCTION Review the learning goals presented with students. Have students record key vocabulary / terms and definitions in their notebooks. Model notetaking and tell students to take notes while engaging in the activity instruction. Discuss and respond collaboratively to interactive questions. Students can answer individual questions in their course notebooks. Pause periodically during the instruction to ask students to recap facts and check for understanding.

SUPPORTED PRACTICE Students can check their notes and share out key points that are restated. Consider having students work in pairs or small groups to complete questions. Ask for class volunteers to help complete interactive practices, such as drag and drop items. Give students time to add key points to their notes as needed.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Give students time to answer each question independently and record the answer in their notebook. As a class, decide which answer to select and then review the response together. Have students mark if they answered the questions correctly or not. Consider asking students to share which answer they chose and why. Listen to reading passages as a class, and share important details before answering the questions.

QUIZ Create a quiet and secure testing environment for the class. Remind students to respond to each question to their best ability. Decide whether or not you will let students use their class notes on the quiz. Give students enough time to answer each quiz question. Determine how quizzes will be graded (i.e. peer-grading).

AUTHENTIC TASKS / PROJECTS Open the teacher directions and student worksheets and follow the instructions on the screen. Print out copies of supplemental worksheets and distribute them to the whole class. Consider having students work in pairs or small groups to complete the tasks or projects. Give students time to plan, draft, and share their responses. Determine if you will have students share their work with a partner and/or turn it in for grading.

Course Grading

Facilitators can take grades and average scores for some or all of the following assignment activities:

Formative assessments: Engagement, class participation, notetaking, and supported practice activities Summative assessments: Independent practice activities, quizzes, and authentic tasks.

*We suggest calculating a daily or weekly average score for activities completed to enter in the student's gradebook.
