Build Students Through Verbal Praise

Build Students Through Verbal Praise

“There is no greater burden than human potential.” [Charlie Brown]

Often, the President of the United States will make a congratulatory phone call to give a word of praise to someone who has made a noteworthy achievement. How would you feel if you received such a call? Being singled out for that kind of attention would make you feel pretty good, wouldn’t it?

Your personal attention can have a similarly positive effect on your students. A simple word of encouragement could be just the thing to propel a student to even greater achievement. Praise students when they do something right. Call them by name and say, “Great job!” Look for opportunities to affirm their hard work. Make a public announcement. Honor them by honoring their accomplishments.

When you praise a student, you are building his or her self-esteem. You are affirming the student’s individual worth. When you praise a student, you are acknowledging that he or she is a person and not just a part of a group. You are also helping the student realize a step of maturity.

Praise is the fuel that powers mastery.
