Introduction to K200 – Part 2: The Screenshot

Introduction to K200 - Part 2: The ScreenshotBy Margaret LionIntroductionThere is often more than one way to do something on a computer. From here on, prepare to see several methods described. Pick the method you like. Begin: Show DesktopIf you have several windows open and wish to see the Desktop again, you could minimize or close all of the windows. However, it is faster and easier to use the following method.Right-click on a blank part of taskbar. Don’t right-click on a task button. After you right-click you will see a new menu. Click on Show the Desktop. (It is located closer to the bottom third of the menu)All of your opened windows will now minimize and you will see the Desktop. ORClick on the space in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar. You will now see the Desktop. 63749215104Click at end of taskbar. 00Click at end of taskbar. 1457864168371Right-click anywhere on the taskbar and click Show the Desktop. 00Right-click anywhere on the taskbar and click Show the Desktop. DO: If you do not have it, then recreate the file Lastname_Firstname_WordPad_Practice.rtf that you made in Part 1: Getting to Know the STC Computer. Make sure you save it on the Desktop and open it. If you saved the file, put it on your Desktop and open it. Remember: If you double-click on the WordPad document to open it from the Desktop it will automatically open in Word. This is acceptable for the class. However, if you want to continue working in WordPad, then you must open WordPad as you did before. Then click File, click Open, and then click on the document. You may use either WordPad or Word when working on this document.Taking A Screenshot – Computer KeyboardA screenshot is a picture of you’re the active window of your computer. If you are looking at WordPad, screenshot would be of WordPad. If you are looking at the Desktop, which you should be, then the screenshot will be of the Desktop. Look at the upper right corner of your keyboard you will see three buttons to the left of the number pad. They are Insert/Print Screen, Home/ Scroll Lock, and PgUp/Pause Break. Notice how the top letters are white and the bottom ones are blue. Blue means you will need to press the Fn key, also blue, located on the lower right side of your keyboard. (Note: This is not common for all keyboards. In fact, this is a new feature of the STC lab this academic year.) You will use the Fn and the Insert/Print Screen button, to take a screenshot. For this exercise, make sure that all of your windows on your Desktop are minimized, including the WordPad document you created earlier. Make sure there is nothing open on your Desktop. You only want to see the red IU Bicentennial background. Press and hold the Fn key then also press Insert/Print Screen. These instructions are usually written “Fn+Insert/PrintScreen”. Click on the task button for your WordPad document. Click inside the document underneath your name. Click the Paste button in the upper left-hand corner. The Desktop image will appear in the document. (See the picture below.)Yes, the image may be too large to be completely seen in the document or run into the margins like the picture below. If that is the case, we will fix that next. If not, read the below instructions anyway as you will need to resize images many times in your life. Resize the PictureIf a picture is too large or too small to be useful, change the size. You can easily make the picture smaller by doing the following: Make sure to click on the image to select it. This means the computer will now work with just the image. The image is selected when you can see a thin line around the image and squares in the corners and sides of the image. Click on the lower right corner of the image so that your mouse changes shape and looks like a double-sided arrow. Click and drag in to the center of the picture. Notice that while you do this, the picture becomes smaller. Keep dragging and making the image smaller until it fits inside the 6” ruler mark displayed at the top of your document. (See picture below.) This mark is shown as a triangle on the ruler. Your document should look similar to the picture below. Make sure to save your work by clicking File then Save or the Save button. It is now saved on the Desktop. 3665855325755Save button. 00Save button. 3968151908534Ruler. 00Ruler. 664210025292056” mark. 006” mark. Taking A Screenshot – Snipping ToolWindows 10 has a unique app that takes pictures of what is on the computer screen but also lets the user decide how much of the screen to show. It is a great tool for capturing words and images from computer screens and programs. This tool is called the Snipping Tool. To take a screen shot with the Snipping Tool, do the following: Make sure the Lastname_Firstname_Wordpad_Practice.rtf is open. Click underneath the picture of the Desktop in the document and press the Enter key. Click on the Start button or Search and type Snipping. The Snipping Tool app will appear in the menu and look similar to the picture below. 34505662100724Snipping Tool app. 00Snipping Tool app. Click on Snipping Tool.A small window will open on your screen and will look like the picture below. 43390871032270New icon. 00New icon. Click and drag the Snipping Tool white cross over the IU Bicentennial icon and words found in the lower right-hand corner of your Desktop. When you release your finger, a picture of what you just captured will show in Snipping Tool. Note: If you do not like the image you captured, then click New and try again. In Snipping Tool, click File then Save As… The Pictures folder will open. This is the default setting in Windows 10. As you did before, go to the Desktop location in the window so you can see This PC > Desktop in the address bar. In the File name text box type Lastname_Firstname_Snipping_Tool.PNG. Click the Save button.Go to your Desktop. You should see the new image you created with Snipping Tool there. Remember to Save Your Work! You will need to save Lastname_Firstname_Snipping_Tool.PNG as well as the Lastname_Firstname_WordPad_Practice.rtf file for the next parts in the instruction and submittal for grading. If you do not yet know how to save this on your USB stick or in Box at IU, attach it to an email and email it to yourself. You can download it from your email when you wish to work on it next. (Your instructor, Ms. Lion does this a lot.)Proceed to HYPERLINK "" \t "_blank" Canvas and take the Part 2: The Screenshot quiz. ................
