Name of group: Go for the GoalFocus of the group: The focus of this group is to improve the attitude, skills, and knowledge of students in order to successfully complete personal goals. Attitude: Goal setting is an important part of succeeding in school. Skills: Ability to set goals and make plans to achieve them.Knowledge: Knowledge of habits that contribute to the Loyola’s success.Goal: Students will explore how their attitude, skills and knowledge affect their personal goals. They will also understand the importance and concept of goal setting. Number of Students: 8-10Grade Level: Targeted group is high school freshman students, but it is appropriate for all grades levels. Adult Leader: A professional school counselor familiar with the academic challenges of the freshman class.Number of Sessions: There will be 5 sessions. The group will meet Thursday from 10:00am to 11:00am during formation class, once a week during January and February Standards: II-B-3d. Understands and uses to establish goals and activities to close the achievement, opportunity and/or information gap.III-B-3e. Understands and uses data to identify gaps between and among different groups of students.III-B-6h. Shares results of action plans with staff, parents, and community. Materials: Informed Consent Poster BoardsPre-test/post-testDescription: Put students in groups of 3-5 and have students discuss important tools and habits that will contribute to their success in high school and post-secondary school. Have students write examples of the importance of habits and examples of how they can demonstrate their use of the habit. Examples are time management, motivation, and planning for future, follow-up, and stress management. Students will keep track of progress and meet throughout the school year to review and discuss results.Session 1 (Introduction)Define the meaning short and long term goals Describe personal goals to the group.Identify possible steps to achieving goalsTake pre-testSession 2 (Poster Board) Have students write down goals.Ask students to write goals on poster board to share with class. Ask questions such as: Do you believe you can accomplish goals? Do you feel they are realistic?Session 3 (Time Management Exploration) Ask students to write tips on board. Be sure following tips are addressed.Set goals. List specific actions to take to reach goals and then prioritize tasks.Use an electronic/paper calendar/planner. Include exams, papers, work hrs. anize your anize your day. Use “to do” lists (prioritize tasks) on small pocket-size spiral notebooks, index cards, or post-it notes to carry with you or enter list into phone. Be realistic. Session 4 (Time Management Implementation) Emphasize:Plan how you intend to use your study time.Study between classes and during day as much as possible.Avoid marathon study sessions.Utilize good study spots—take control of study environment.Time Management Exercise:Ask students to:Share feedback on what is working well for them, how they spend their time and what their struggles are.
