NOVEMBER 2018
A request from Bobby McMillan at Black Hawk Range:
Last weekend (11/17/18), several of your club members were at Blackhawk. As always, we welcome them. However, two were going a little too fast between the range house and the club range. We spoke to one of them concerning his speed. He apologized and promised to reduce his speed in the future.
Please remind all of your members that they need to go slow down the dirt road -- between Jarratt Road and the range property AND while on range property.
Thanks,
Bobby
ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
The annual membership meeting of the South Texas Marksmanship Training Center was held on November 17th at the San Pedro Church of Christ. We had a separate meeting room set aside for us at GRADY’S BAR BQ, just up the street on San Pedro. New officers for the coming year are Chris Rabago, president; Louis Upton, vice president; Rene Gonzalez, secretary; Pat McClean, treasurer.
SMALLBORE RIFLE
Wayne Nunn
No results from last month, rained out.
HIGH POWER RIFLE
Our October High Power training Match, held on Saturday, October 27th, had five shooters. The weather was good, after all the rain we had. High score was Nez Rongero, with a 768-16. Timothy Hessel shot a 200-14x on the 200 yard sitting rapid. He had a couple leak out at 300 yard prone rapid with a 198.
The next scheduled High Power training match is scheduled for Saturday, November 24th, at the CTSA Range, New Braunfels. Match fee is $20 for adults, $10 for Military, and $10 for juniors. Gate should be open by 0730, followed by sign-up. Fun begins at 0830 for squadding and set up. First rounds go down range at 0900. This will be the 88 round NRA across the course training match. It is NRA 'APPROVED". Shooters will score and pull targets. Shooters choosing not to pull targets must provide a substitute puller.
In case the match is cancelled, I will update the Organization’s calendar the night before.
The next CMP G/S/M Garand training match will be held on Sunday, December 2nd.
The schedule of matches for 2019 is posted on the Organization's calendar on the web page.
PISTOL
Six competitors showed up on a cool Saturday to shoot a 1800 Precision Pistol Training Match. Stephen Spencer won the match with a 1602-23X. Harvey Dickens took second with a 1386-11X. Stephen also took first in .22, Center Fire, and .45. Bob Maxon took 2nd in .22 and Center Fire. Harvey Dickens took second in .45. Philip Beekley shot two handed and scored a respectable 1251-6X. Other competitors were Alan Wood, who shot his .22 revolver and David Singleton, who shot the .22 phase and fired a 9mm in Center Fire.
VINTAGE MILITARY RIFLE
South Texas Marksmanship Training Center Vintage Military Rifle Postal Match – 2018.
The winner is Bill K., shooting a Finn M-39 from Long Island NY, with a score of 199-10X. (He is now pondering his prize selection. Second place will get what Bill doesn't choose.)
Second place goes to Chris S., shooting an Argentine 1891 Mauser shooter from Massena NY, with a score of 196-7X. Third place shooter was Jeff J., from Iowa, scoring a 195-7X with yet another Finn M-39.
I guess NY is still a happenin' shootin' state!?!...apparently more so than Texas. Your match director was stunned to discover he was the only Texas shooter, and the only participant from the ranks of STMTC. Many thanks go to our other participants from other far off places like UK, Florida, and Iowa.
Watch for the next Vintage Rifle Postal Match, which will be available in the Spring of 2019. It will start and end earlier in the year, and will be a little different from this year’s match: It will allow any semi-auto rifle of caliber 6.5mm or higher, DESIGNED BEFORE 1955. The target will be very similar, but with larger aiming black and value rings, for positioning at the new distance of 100 yards.
JUNION DIVISION – 4H
Chris Rabago
Helotes 4H is meeting every other Sunday at the Helotes Ag. Center to practice indoor 3P air rifle. Dr. Rabago has been attending these practices and coaching alongside Craig Bourquin and Kevin White. A few 4H’er competed in the MSG Roy P. Benavidez Memorial Match (3P Air Rifle) at LEE High School on October 25-27. This was a 3x20 CMP sanctioned match. Anne White (Churchill) won 1st with a score of 584-34x; Isabella Rios (Johnson) won 2nd with 582-36x; Bella Gamez (Johnson) was 5th with 567-23x; Paige Bourquin (Independent) placed 12th with 556-20x; and Carissa Rabago (Independent) came in 15th with 554-16x. There were 48 shooters from across South Texas at this match.
In November, the kids from Helotes 4H will attend a practice at Blackhawk to be introduced to small bore 3P. Bexar County Fishing and Shooting plans to start practicing pistol and small bore at Blackhawk in November. We plan to have a STMTC membership drive during this time as families are introduced to STMTC.
