NOTES: Lesson 2-2: Solving Two-Step Equations

Solve:

1. Separate the left "side" from the right "side" of the equation by drawing a line down the equal sign.

2. Identify the variable (the letter).

3. Identify the problem's operations (

). (Two-step equations have two operations.)

4. Isolate the variable (get it by itself) by doing the opposite operations to BOTH sides of the equation.

(Think of solving equations as PEMDAS in reverse... we are "un-doing" the operations.)

a. "Un-do" any adding or subtracting first.

b. "Un-do" any multiplying or dividing last.

Check:

1. Write the original equation.

2. Substitute your answer in for the variable.

3. Do PEMDAS on each side (if necessary), to see if the two "sides" are equivalent.

a. If the left = the right... put a smiley face ... you got it right!

b. If the left the right, go back to find your mistake(s). Fix it!
