Learning Plan

PREPARATION: 0. Check with the classroom teacher before class begins to make sure that there is a CD player available in the room.

INTRODUCTION [5 minutes] 1. Introduce yourself and write your name on the board. Refer to yourself as Se?or(a) _______ and explain that this is how we address an adult in Spanish.

2. Welcome the students to Spanish class using the term Bienvenidos. Have the students repeat after you.

3. Survey the class to see how many students speak another language already. Write the names of the languages on the board that are represented by the students in the class and show excitement about how many different languages people know.

4. Get a show of hands as to how many speak Spanish already? Call on several of them to share a couple of words that they know or to explain how they learned them.

5. Invite the rest to share as many different words in Spanish as they can think of.

6. To help them come up with words, ask them if they are familiar with Spanish words from popular TV shows (such as arriba, r?pido, mochila, abuela) or even words from Mexican food items (such as tortilla, queso) and other words like pi?ata, adi?s, etc.

7. If they haven't already, mention a few common Spanish words that we use in English (radio, piano, soda, mosquito, armadillo, robot) that are the same in Spanish.

8. Tell them that this will be easy and fun because everyone knows a lot of words already.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS [3-5 MINUTES] 9. Discuss that the same classroom behavior expectations apply to Spanish class and that you will be enforcing the regular classroom teacher's behavior rules.

10. Let the students know that, in Spanish class, it's very important that everyone be able to hear so that they can learn the new sounds and words.

11. If you have any classroom procedures that you would like the students to follow--for example, a way that you would like to get the students' attention--introduce this to the students at this time.

SALUDOS SONG [5 MINUTES] 12. Introduce the Greetings and Magic Words vocabulary by playing the Risas y Sonrisas song Saludos in parts to introduce each phrase separately. Use hand motions and gestures to indicate the meanings of each word (suggestions are provided below). Hello ? Hola How are you? ? ?C?mo est?s? Wave to the students and have them wave back.

Very well, thank you ? Muy bien, gracias Thumbs up

Nice to meet you ? Much gusto Welcome ? Bienvenidos Shake hands

See you tomorrow ? Hasta ma?ana Goodbye ? Adi?s Wave goodbye

13. Play the song from start to finish and have the students sing with you. Encourage the students to use the gestures as they sing. Praise the students for their participation.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: CRAFT: [10 MINUTES] 14. Give the students the hand-shaped die cuts (or provide them with a piece of the construction paper and have them trace their hands onto it, then cut out the paper hands with their scissors). Write the words Hola and Adi?s on the board, reminding them that one means hello and the other means goodbye. Tell them we're going to make our own Hello/Goodbye hands. Have them write Hola on one side and Adi?s on the other.

POLITE WORDS (Please / Thank you / You're Welcome / I'm sorry) [5-7 MINUTES] 15. Prompt the students to tell you what kind of polite words they can use to demonstrate good manners or to ask for things nicely from one another.

16. When the students provide one of the polite magic words (palabras m?gicas) in English, provide the Spanish equivalent ? Please (Por favor) / Thank you (Gracias) / You're welcome (De nada) / I'm sorry (Perd?n) / Very Kind (muy amable). [ALTERNATE: Ask if anyone knows the Spanish equivalent.]

17. Reinforce the vocabulary by playing the Risas y Sonrisas song Palabra M?gicas. Play the song through to have the students listen to it first, then play it a second time to have
