Objective:

Design the front page of a newspaper. Pretend you are a reporter for a local newspaper. You have been assigned to illustrate the highlights of the Civil War on the front page of the newspaper. Include how the beliefs, values, and emotions contributed to the Civil War and how these issues are similar to the wars of today.

TEKS:

▪ 4.4 (A) describe the impact of the Civil War and Reconstruction of Texas.

▪ 4.23 (D) Create written and visual material such as journal entries, reports, graphic organizers, outlines, and bibliographies;

Duration of Lesson: approximately 1-2 lessons

Before the Computer: Teacher will review information concerning the Civil War. Each student will research enough information to write their newspaper report. Brainstorm possible newspaper headlines and article titles. Review the single space rule (after each word, comma and after punctuation mark). Locate a picture from the Internet and save to your H:drive

Procedure:

1. Direct students to click on Required Technology Lessons link on Student Technology Resources.

2. Research your topic to find information from the Internet.

3. Find a picture for your newsletter

4. Right-click on the image and save it to your H: drive.

5. Copy the URL for documentation.

6. Click “Civil War Newsletter”

7. Click the Save button

8. Name and save document to Home Directory (H: drive)

9. Close Internet Explorer and go to My Computer.

10. Open the H:Drive folder and then open the PowerPoint file just saved.

11. To edit text, click in the text box. Highlight the words to replace text.

12. To change font, highlight text and choose font from tool bar.

13. To change font size or color, highlight the text and use the toolbar.

14. To resize the text box, click the text and then click and drag one of the handles on the box.

15. To change the back ground color of a text box, click on text box to select it. [pic]

16. Right-click on text box and click Format AutoShape.

17. Click the down arrow to select a color and click OK.

18. To delete text boxes, click the text and then click on the box that appears to select the text box, press delete.

19. To delete image, click on the image and press delete.

20. To insert an image, click Insert/Picture/From File on the menu bar. [pic]

21. Navigate to your picture.

22. Use handles to resize the image.

23. Click and drag the center of the picture to move it to the desired location.

24. Paste the URL where the image was harvested to the text box under the picture.

25. Click Tools/Spelling on menu bar to check spelling.

26. Save and print document.
