OWNER’S MANUAL

OWNER’S MANUAL/SURVIVAL GUIDE! 100 points

Your task will be to create an owner’s manual OR survival guide for a product that wouldn’t typically require one. Some ideas include a bottle of water, a pair of jeans, a sandwich, or how to get your brother to do your chores. Be as creative as possible when deciding on your item.

Maybe you want to make a “life manual,” like how to escape a bad date or how to sleep in class while giving the impression you are awake. Some students have gotten really creative and focused on how to plan for the future, how to get over a breakup, or how to be a good friend! Sometimes they are silly, like how to be the King of Facebook or creating the best Twitter handle. Again, be creative!

In your manual, be sure to include the processes of acquiring the item/completing the task. Other suggestions may be using the item, storing the item, unique scenarios, etc.

You must include illustrations to go along with your manual (this is where TOONDOO comes into play!). The more creative / descriptive you are about your steps, the higher your grade will be!!

TOONDOO lets you create online comic books. You can use their clipart images or upload your own. Any images you take off the internet you must cite the URLs in a separate document. Here are the steps for creating your manual/survival guide:

1. Choose a partner or work alone (you need an email address)

2. Go to and make a FREE account

3. Pick a username and password then IMMEDIATELY save it to a document so you don’t forget!! **You may even want to upload it to the UN/PW page on edmodo.

4. Click CREATE

5. Choose how you want to set up your cartoon

6. Plan a “script”- what steps do you need to include? What needs to be explained?

7. CREATE!! You can upload pictures or use the ones they have.

8. Make sure you SAVE as PUBLIC

9. When you are done, from the “preview” page, click the button the looks like this < >

a. Copy code

10. To turn it in: (2 places- same thing each place)

a. FIRST go to one of your blogs, switch to HTML tab (like you did with VOICETHREAD), and paste the code. Write a 3-4 sentence summary of your manual. Include BOTH names! THINK: what would go on the back cover?

b. SECOND, go to EDMODO, click TURN IN, find the LINK button (looks like a chain link) and paste the code. You will need to put in a title. Copy & paste your 3-4 sentence summary in the note field, choose and emoticon, and CLICK TURN IN.

Be sure to brainstorm your ideas before you begin to make your manual. Don’t forget that your item must be school appropriate in order to receive credit. Finally, look at 3 classmate’s manuals and leave them “comments” on their blogs. Constructive feedback: what did you like (specific)? What questions do you have? What did you think could be improved? Each person does this by themselves- not with your partner.
