E15 How to Tie a Rope Halter

Using a Fiador Knot and Blood Knots.

The rope halter has no hardware to rust; it's easy to adjust, hard to break and best of all, you can make it yourself. With a few simple steps you can construct a safe and viable halter. When it is correctly fitted and adjusted, it is one of the best halters for communication with a horse.

It normally takes 20ft of rope per halter, ¼ inch thick or thicker. Thin rope is a little more severe than thick rope and gets your horse’s attention if the horse pulls back.

The rope halter relies on a simple overhand knot as the basis for making your halter. If you can tie your shoes you can tie an overhand knot!

The simple overhand knot is then used to create a double overhand knot or a “blood Knot”. The double overhand knot is ideal for the rope halter because there is no flat portion of the knot. Remember, one of the biggest advantages of a rope halter is better communication between the trainer and the horse. The blood knot helps to achieve that communication needed when working with a horse on a halter.

Lets get started

1. To begin, measure 8 feet from one end of the rope and tie a right-hand knot. Then tie a left hand knot 10 inches from the previous knot. Measure knot-to-knot, but do not include the knot in the measurements. These two knots will form the right & left noseband knots on each side of the muzzle.

2. The next step is to tie a fiador knot. The fiador Knot should be about 9 inches from the noseband knots. Use the diagram on the next page to tie the fiador knot.

3. Using the short end of the rope, measure 6 inches and tie an overhand knot. Now use the long piece of rope and tie a double overhand knot. This will form the throatlatch knot.

Tying the Double Overhand Knot

Step 1: Loosen the existing overhand knot and feed the loose end of the rope through the middle of the existing knot. Make sure the rope goes into the center loop of the existing knot on the same side of the loop as the rope on the first overhand knot.

Step 2: Take the end of the rope over the top of the overhand knot, crossing directly in the groove or V of the knot and back behind the two strands of rope. Some find it easier to turn the existing double overhand knot to the side at about a 45-degree angle. This makes it easier for the next step.

Step 3: Bring the end of the rope around and through the middle of the overhand knot. Take the rope through the “new” overhand, tighten the rope and take up the slack. Turn the knot over and you’ll have a wonderful double overhand knot

4. Next, you will measure down the long strand of rope 9 inches and tie an overhand knot. Then run the end of the rope back through it forming a loop. Now make another overhand knot inside the first (creating a double overhand knot). This will form the final knot and the loop that will be used to fasten the halter.

5. Next, measure 9 inches from the fastening halter knot you just made to the left knot on the noseband and tie a double overhand knot.

6. Now move across the top of the noseband and tie a double overhand knot on the right noseband knot.

7. The last knot you will tie will be the right cheek knot. It will be made using one lead from the throatlatch knot and the other lead from the right noseband knot. The knot should be placed 9 inches from both the noseband knot and the throatlatch knot and it should be even with the fastening halter knot.

8. Trim the ends so they are even and use a match to seal the frayed ends.

Tying the latch knot

Bring the tie strings through the back of the loop. Hold your fingers below the loop; bring the strings around the back of the loop, through and under the strings. This is the best way to tie the latch knot. It won’t come loose and it will come apart easily when you go to take the halter off.
