Objective – Role play, by creating a fictional “wagoneer” , and then respond to hypothetical events encountered while on the Oregon Trail.

Introduction

It took a lot of courage to pack up from where you once called home to head out on the Oregon Trail. True, there were lots of stories about fortunes to be made; rich soil to be tilled; abundant minerals to be mined for the taking. But, there was also a huge risk!

Getting Started

Begin this assignment by creating who you are! You can get some ideas by scanning pages 196 – 199 in the student text. Create your biography, and be sure to share why it is you are leaving, and what you hope to achieve by moving to the northwest.

Why Me?

Along your journey the following mis-haps occur, and you must find a solution to each one! Remember, somehow you made it, so you can’t kill yourself off with each misfortune….

• Once bitten! You are bitten in the leg by a rattlesnake. What is the treatment for rattlesnake bite? Explain.

• Ouch, that hurts! You didn’t ‘negotiate’ very well with the locals, and try to run away….only to be hit in the back with an arrow. How do you treat an arrow wound and ward-off infection?

• That tastes bitter! You wander into a clear pool of water and are thirsty. You take a drink only to discover it’s alkaline water. Are you going to die, (remember: you can’t!) or is there an antidote that can save you?

• I’m hungry, too! Red ones, blue ones, black ones, white ones. All these berries look delicious. Which ones can you eat, and which ones will make you sick?
