Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

The primary objective of this course is to help students understand how accounting meets the information needs of various users by developing and communicating information that is useful for decision-making. This course introduces students to basic financial accounting concepts, financial statement preparation, and analysis. Specific learning outcomes for students in this course include:

• Being able to identify the users and uses of financial statements and determine the relationship among the four statements.

• Being able to define elements of financial statements and determine how business transactions affect the accounting equation and the financial statements.

• Being able to define the accounting cycle, construct journal entries, prepare basic financial statements, and compute basic financial ratios.

• Being able to tell the impact of accountants and financial reports on the economy and financial markets.

In order to enroll in 3311 Intermediate Accounting, you will either need to: (1) score in the top 1/3 of your section’s Final Exam and earn a B in the course, or (2) pass an entrance exam based mostly on the topics covered in this course. Information about the entrance exam is available at

Required Textbook and Calculator

Textbook: Accounting: Tools for Business Decision Makers, Third Edition, Kimmel, Weygandt, and Kieso. The book is available in either a hardcopy or binder format through the University Bookstore.

*This is the same textbook you will use for Accounting 2302

Calculator: A four function basic calculator is required for all exams (four function means the calculator can only perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). You are not allowed to use (1) a programmable calculator or (2) a cell phone as a calculator.

Class Session and Attendance Policies

Read the assigned chapter before each class.

Students are expected to attend all classes, take all examinations at the scheduled times and complete all homework by the designated due dates.

Please be courteous to the rest of the class by turning off cell phones and ipods when you enter the classroom. Text messaging during class is unacceptable.

Quizzes 1-4: 10 points each; Exams 1-3: 100 points each;

Final Examination: 150 points

All quizzes and exams are closed book/closed note and will consist of calculations and theory questions. Quiz and exam formats may include multiple choice questions and longer problems questions requiring comprehensive solutions. The quizzes and exams will include questions similar to those in the homework assignments. I will announce the quiz ahead of time. Exam dates provided in the syllabus are subject to change. Final Exam will be comprehensive covering materials from chapter 1 to chapter 13. All students should bring a Form 882-E Scantron to all exams.

I will provide all scratch paper for exams. You cannot use any of your own paper. If your phone rings or if you use your phone in any way during an exam, your exam will be picked up and you will be required to leave the room. Your grade will be based on the amount of work you have completed. I reserve the right to seat or reseat any student before or during an exam.

Exam Make-up Policy:

You have to inform me in advance if you are going to miss an exam and it should be only for university excused reasons.

There are no make-ups for exams. If you miss an exam, the final exam percentage score will replace the missed exam grade. If you miss two exams, you will receive a score of zero on the second missed exam.

Homework: 120 points

There will be a total of 12 homework assignments worth 10 points each. Your works have to be prepared and submitted online through the WileyPLUS system. The assignments will appear in the “Assignments” section of the WileyPLUS website and must be completed by the designated due date in order to receive credits. Please be aware of the due dates.

Academic Integrity

It is the philosophy of The University of Texas at Arlington that academic dishonesty is a completely unacceptable mode of conduct and will not be tolerated in any form. Drop Policy

Students may drop or swap (adding and dropping a class concurrently) classes through self-service in MyMav from the beginning of the registration period through the late registration period. After the late registration period, students must see their academic advisor to drop a class or withdraw. Undeclared students must see an advisor in the University Advising Center. Drops can continue through a point two-thirds of the way through the term or session. It is the student's responsibility to officially withdraw if they do not plan to attend after registering. Students will not be automatically dropped for non-attendance. Repayment of certain types of financial aid administered through the University may be required as the result of dropping classes or withdrawing. Contact the Financial Aid Office for more information.
