time you use it AND include the highest number you reach EVERY

TIME. Do this until all 30 numbers are checked off for that day!

Dont forget BRING THIS LOGBOOK and INCENTIVE SPIROMETER

ON THE DAY OF YOUR SURGERY.

AFTER Surgery: You will use your spirometer even more! You will use

it 10 times PER HOUR! Finally, turn this book in before discharge!

How do I use an incentive spirometer?

? Using incentive spirometry (IS) will help to open up your

lungs, improve your breathing, and remove secretions.

? Using IS before and after your surgery can lower your risk of

pneumonia (lung infection) and may help you go home

sooner.

Sit up straight in a chair or on the edge of your bed.

Hold the incentive spirometer upright.

Breathe out normally.

Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and

seal your lips around it.

Breathe in slowly and as deeply as possible. You will see

the blue piston rising up toward the top.

Hold your breath for as long as possible.

Remove the mouthpiece from your mouth and breathe out

slowly.

Rest for a few seconds and then repeat steps 3-7 at least 10

times.

After you have completed 10 deep breaths, cough a few
