PEER REVISION – NARRATIVE ESSAY

10 STEPS TO AN ESSAY YOU CAN BE PROUD OF

1. You’ll need highlighters in these colors: yellow, pink, green, and orange.

FIND THE GOOD STUFF:

2. Highlight all SENSORY DETAILS in yellow. Then, using a pencil or pen, label each example with these letters:

i. SM = smell

ii. S = sight

iii. T = taste

iv. H = hear

v. F = feel

3. Highlight all STRONG VERBS (action words) in pink

4. Highlight DIALOGUE in green

5. Highlight TRANSITIONS in orange (words that move the reader through the essay and introduce flashbacks)

FIND THE BAD STUFF:

6. With a blue or black pen, circle all the times you wrote the word “said.”

7. With a blue or black pen, circle all the weak, simple verbs (action words---went, got, ate…)

8. With a blue or black pen, circle all the simple adjectives (describing words--- pretty, big, fast…)

9. With a blue or black pen, circle all the errors you can find in spelling, capitalization, commas, periods, dialogue punctuation, etc.

ON THE BACK OF THE BACK PAGE OF YOUR ESSAY, WRITE DOWN:

Strengths: (Overall, what did you do WELL?)

A.

B.

Needs: (Overall, what do you need to IMPROVE UPON?)

A.

B.

10. FIX ERRORS & TURN IN YOUR PERFECTED COPY ON THURSDAY, FEB. 3RD WITH:

a. Your self-scored bright pink rubric (do not use a pink highlighter, duh)

b. Your beautiful, best, best draft, with all the errors fixed from the first draft. I’d better see changes and serious revision from the first draft… I’ll be checking and comparing them.
