WHAT ARE THE PARTS OF THE DBQ?

The First page of a DBQ includes the following information: theme, historical context, task, and instructions telling you to prepare the documents before you write the essay.

PART A: SHORT ANSWER

Documents

This section contains documents with cartoons, graphs, and primary and secondary source reading passages that relate to the topic of the DBQ

PART B: ESSAY

Historical Context

Gives you the setting of background information for the essay topic. This is usually about 4-5 sentences long. It gives you general background information on the topic, and then gets more and more specific to the topic.

Example: Native Americans lived in North America for thousands of years before the first Europeans arrive and established colonies. During that time Native Americans developed their own unique cultures. When the Europeans arrived, Native American cultures came into direct conflict with the culture of the Europeans.

Task

Outlines the specific topic for each body paragraph. The topics may be presented in paragraph form or can be bulleted.

The task section will guide you with organizing the topics of each paragraph in your DBQ essay.

Example: Task: Using information from the documents and your knowledge of social studies, write an essay in which you:

▪ Describe the cultures of Native Americans prior to the arrival of the Europeans

▪ Explain the impact of the European settlement of North American on the lives of Native Americans.

STEPS YOU WILL TAKE TO COMPLETE YOUR DBQ

1. Read the Historical Context and Task carefully.

▪ Think: What does the question ask you to do?

▪ Underline key words, dates/eras, names, etc in the question

2. Brainstorm your own answer without looking at the documents

• What do you already know about this topic?

• Record your ideas on the Brainstormers Sheet

3. Read and analyze each of the documents in Part A.

▪ Look at the document carefully.

▪ Read the questions first!

▪ Identify the following:

1. Author and time the document was written

2. Examine any pictures, maps, graphs, etc.

3. Read any reading passages, highlighting important questions

4. Identify the main idea and write in in the right margin

5. Reread and answer the question using information from the document

4. USE BLOCKING SHEET TO…Plan/Organize your essay so that you prove you thesis with supporting evidence, details and information.

▪ Use the bullets in the Task to Identify the main topics for each body paragraph that you need to plan on your blocking sheet

▪ Select the documents that go with each part of the task

▪ Fill out the DBQ Blocking Sheet to organize your information from your documents and to record any outside information you know on the topic.

5. Write an organized essay that answers the Task.
