HP ProLiant SNMP only Management Pack Guide

The HP ProLiant SNMP only management pack monitors the health of Hewlett-Packard ProLiant server hardware, using SNMP get queries only.

It is thought as an add-on to HP’s management packs when no Operations Manager agents can be installed on the servers (non-windows operating system – namely VMware ESX servers).

The management pack requires at least Operations Manager 2007 SP1.

Getting Started

1 Before importing the Management Pack

The management pack consists of two files. Use the Import Management Pack function from the Administration pane of the Operations Console to import the management pack. Make sure you have all the management pack, the SNMP management pack depends on, imported as well. The import wizard will let you know if some are missing.

All dependencies are defined against management packs provided by Microsoft or HP. If you can’t find them on your Operations Manager installation media, you should be able to download them from here:

Microsoft:

HP: (HP ProLiant Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager)

The following table lists the management pack files and the dependencies (in grey)

|Management Pack File |Version |Vendor |

|Custom.HP.HewlettPackard.Servers.ProLiant.SNMPonly.mp |1.0.0.70 |Custom |

|Custom.SNMP.Library.mp |1.0.0.1 |Custom |

|HewlettPackard.Servers.Library.mp |1.0.33.0 |HP |

|HewlettPackard.Servers.ProLiant.mp |1.0.33.0 |HP |

|Microsoft.SystemCenter.InstanceGroup.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

|Microsoft.SystemCenter.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

|Microsoft.workDevice.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

|System.Health.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

|System.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

|System.Snmp.Library.mp |6.0.6278.0 |Microsoft |

2 Other Requirements

1 SNMP Network Device Access

This management pack gets all status and discovery information by SNMP gets against HP OIDs. The servers that should be monitored, have to have HP System Insight agent installed and their SNMP stack configured.

The Operations Manager management or gateway server designated as SNMP proxy node for the ProLiant system to be managed must be allowed get access to the relevant MIBs.

Discover the ProLiant systems (as Network Devices) using Operation Manager’s Discovery Wizard.

1 Object Type Model

The following diagram shows the type model of the HP ProLiant SNMP only management pack. Inheritance is shown vertically while Hosting and Health Roll up are drawn horizontally. Blue object types are part of the management pack, while grey ones already exist. They are defined by the management pack’s dependencies.

Using the Management Pack

After importing the management pack, discovery and monitoring is going to work automatically. All SNMP network devices found in Operations Managers repository are going to be queried to check if they represent HP ProLiant servers.

1 Console Views

This management pack does not define additional views. It makes use of the ones defined by HP’s management packs. In Operations Manager’s Console, the monitoring pane contains the following views under ‘HP Servers’.

• Active Alerts

• Computers

• Group State

• Health Collection State

• HP Management Servers

• Server Diagram

• Server State

• Task Status

The ones in bold type do include information about SNMP only managed ProLiant servers.
