RX2600 Setup

This document will help you in setting up the HP RX2600 system you have received from the SPP System Loan Programme.

Out of the box

When unpacking the system you should have the following

1 x RX2600 System

1 x USB Keyboard

1 x USB Mouse

1 x HP Single 25 pin to 3 9 pin cable

Connecting Up

Connect up the keyboard, mouse and power connections as normal. You may connect a monitor to the VGA connector, this however (if the monitor is capable of less than 1280 x 1024 resolution) will not function in graphical mode until the system setup has been completed and certain X11 configurations are checked (and possibly changed). Until the X11 configuration is done you will need to use a standard console session to the system or the vga console can be used in character mode.

The 9 pin console port on the system is currently not supported, you will need to use the 25 pin to triple 9pin cable. This needs to be connected to the 25 pin console/management port on the back of the system. Your standard console cable should then be connected to the 9 pin connector on the cable marked CONSOLE. If you do not have a standard console cable, a null modem cable you also suffice.

Using the VGA Console Instead of the Serial Console

To get the vga console to work properly you will need to make changes in the EFI menu. These changes are detailed below.

Select “Boot Option Maintenance Menu” from the EFI boot manager menu when it appears.

Select the “Active Console Output Devices” option from the menu.

Make sure only the last entry in the list has an asterisk against it.

Select “Save Setting to Nvram”

Select Exit

Repeat the previous three steps for “Active Conosole Input Devices” and “Active Standard Error Devices”.

Select “Cold Reset”

Power Up and Configuration

Power up the system, you will hear most probably hear a series of tones from the system as it boots up (the system light may also be flashing yellow) do not be concerned about this at the moment.

As the system powers up you will see the bootup sequence on your console. You will be asked to provide language, time zone, system name, root password and network details.

Once you have provided the details the system will finish configuration and provide you with the standard console prompt. I would suggest that you first login and issue a reboot command to make sure the system comes up properly by itself.

Use SAM to configure you network adapters and remaining disk space. Details on how to do this can be found in the HPUX 11i v1.6 documentation found at

Clearing the system alarms

The mutitone signal and flashing yellow system light that you may have seen during the setup process is an indication that there are several warning or errors listed within the chassis code logs. To clear these out you will need to access the “Management Processor”.

Accessing the management processor from the console prompt is quite simple, just use + at any time from the console (NOTE: This can only be done from a SERIAL console, NOT a VGA console.), you will then be asked for a service processor userid and password. Press in response to these requests as no ID or password has been assigned. Once in the service processor command prompt MP> type sl to access the chassis code logs and press c to clear the logs. To get back to the standard console type co.

Getting an X Console on the VGA Monitor.

If you have connected a monitor which is capable of 1280 by 1024 resolution you should see a standard CDE interface on the VGA monitor. If however you have a monitor that has a maximum resolution below this you will need to edit the following file.

/etc/X11/XF86Config

Towards the end of this file will be parameters for screen resolution, colour depth and sync rates for your monitor. When editing these values, especially sync rates, make sure that they conform to your monitor or you may cause damage to the monitor.

Note : You may need to book into single user mode to be able to edit this file if the CDE interface tries to start on your VGA console. To enter single user mode wait for the message “Press Any Key to interrupt Autoboot” and then press the return key.

At the prompt (HPUX>) type boot vmunix –is

Once the system has booted up you will need to mount the /var and /usr volumes.
