Student Instructions for Screen Reader ...

Student Instructions for Screen Reader UsersYou can read the following instructions to students before you administer the MAP assessments as a guide to explain MAP testing concepts. These instructions are generalized to apply to various MAP tests and include information for students using screen reader software. You may delete this paragraph and then print/emboss these instructions for students to refer to during testing, if needed.General MAP Testing This is not a timed test, and you will have enough time to read and answer all the questions. Give this test your best effort. Some questions will be easy, and others will be more difficult. You cannot get all the answers correct, but that is okay. If you really do not know the answer to a question, try to eliminate some answer choices, and then choose the best answer out of the remaining options. You do need to answer all questions. Some important things to remember as you are taking the test are:After you sign in, please raise your hand if you cannot find your name on your computer screen. Before you click the Next button, you may change your mind about an answer and select as many answers to a question as you like. The answer options are checkboxes but you cannot uncheck your choice. To change your answer, simply select another answer option. Once you click Next or press the Enter key, you are finished with that question. Your answer is locked into the system, and you cannot change it or go back to a question you have already answered. On some questions you may hear begin and end emphasis for certain words. This means that the word is underlined or bolded and is an important word.If you are unsure about a word in a question, raise your hand for help. I can pronounce the word for you, but I cannot tell you what the word means or explain any math symbols. Some items may ask you to fill in the blank. The blank space will be read by your screen reader as “fill in the blank.”If you come across a question that appears to be missing answers, questions, or instructions, raise your hand for help. Navigating the TestYou will be asked to login to a test session in order to start the test. The first page has two edit fields for Test Session Name and Password. I will provide you with this information. Use the tab key to navigate the edit fields and enter or spacebar to select the Join button. The second page will ask you to choose your name from a combo box. Use tab to navigate to this list and up/down arrow to search through the list of names. When you find your name, press tab to move to the next combo box.During the test, you can use the typical key commands that you normally use to navigate a webpage with your screen reader. Some examples:You can navigate by headings. There will be 5–7 headings on each question page. There is only one heading level 1, MAP, on each page but there are several other headings at level 2, such as, Toolbar, Directions, Information, Question, Options and Navigation. You can read line by line. This is the down arrow in JAWS, for example.Use spacebar to select an answer option.Navigate by buttons. For example with JAWS you can use B to go to the Next button and select it by pressing the spacebar.Mathematics Testing On some (but not all) test questions, a calculator appears in the Toolbar. You will hear an announcement when a calculator is available. You can use the calculator in the toolbar to help you answer the question. Reading and Language Usage TestingReading passages can be short or long. Continue reading until you hear the next heading level 2. Sometimes the same passage is repeated with a different question, so do not skip the question because the passage is the same. Some questions may ask you to choose the correct punctuation or spelling. You may want to use a refreshable braille display or use your screen reader to hear each character or word. In JAWS you can use the right and left arrows to hear each letter in a word or the punctuation in a sentence. End. ................
