Human Anatomy & Physiology

Human Anatomy & Physiology

George Bush High School

Ms. S. Wallace

Course Description

Human Anatomy and Physiology is a one-year course designed for college-bound students who

desire to develop an understanding and appreciation of the human body. Students will learn the structures, functions, and regulation of human body systems through a variety of strategies.

Prerequisites

Students should have successfully completed one year of biology, one year of chemistry, and one year of physics (can be taken concurrently)

Textbook

Anthony’s Textbook of Anatomy & Physiology, 17th ed., Thibodeau and Patton

Course Objectives

By the end of the academic year, students should be able to:

·         Name and understand the terms that describe relative positions, sections and regions of the human body

·         Distinguish types of tissues

·         Identify parts of the skeletal, muscular and integumentary systems

·         Describe the conduction and transmission of nerve impulses and integration with the special senses

·         Associate various hormones with function and glandular origin

·         Understand the cells, tissues and organs involved in the immune system

·         Identify and describe function of organs in the digestive, cardio/pulmonary and urinary systems

·         Compare/contrast male and female reproductive organs

·         Compare/contrast human anatomy with cat anatomy

Grading

FBISD grading policy is 50% daily and 50% major

Student progress and understanding will be measured using a variety of assessments that may include the following:

·         Class work and homework

   o        Diagrams / Labeling

   o        Study Guide Packets

   o        Worksheets

·         Participation

·         Projects and activities

·         Lab exercises, dissections and reports

·         Chapter tests and quizzes

. Cumulative final exam each semester

FBISD policy states that all students who make below a 75 on a test have the option to retest.  To do so, they must attend the teacher's designated study session previous to the retest date. Highest grade possible the student can earn on the retest is a 75.

→ All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period.

→ If absent on the day a project/major grade is due – must have someone bring it that day or turn it in early

Labs

Students must take the safety test before they will be allowed to work in the lab. Students will follow directions and strict

safety procedures at all times or they will be excused from lab work with no score.

Attendance during all lab days is extremely important as some lab work can be difficult to make up. An alternative assignment

may be required if a lab is missed.

This course is an elective science course and dissection plays an important role in the study and understanding of Human Anatomy and Physiology. Therefore, dissections are required; no alternative assignments will be arranged. Dissections to be included in this course may include: brain, heart, kidney, frog, and cat.

During the Reproductive System, the Miracle of Life will be shown in class.

Classroom Policies

1. Students have one day for each excused absence to make-up work. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed during an absence.

2. Late work

a. Daily – 20 points off one day late, 30 points off two days late. After two days, 40 points off.

b. Major – 25 points off one day late, 30 points off two days late. 50 points off after starting with third day late.

3. Eating, drinking, and gum are not permitted in the classroom or lab. That includes water

4. Follow all safety rules.

5. Students are expected to complete their own work. Cheating, copying and plagiarism are not allowed. Suspicious work will receive a zero and parents may be contacted or referral to assistant principal may occur.

6. Cell phones should be powered down during lecture, quizzes and tests. All other times powered up following teacher direction.

7. No talking during quizzes/tests.

8. If caught with a cell phone during or after a quiz or test, a zero will automatically be given.

9. Students should be in their seats ready to work when the bell rings.

10. You are to be respectful of your fellow classmates, yourself, your teacher, and school property. (Any destruction of property will be dealt with immediately and parents will be notified.)

11. Class participation is encouraged, unrelated conversations are not.
