Survey of Human Anatomy and Physiology (Bio 15) will cover the structure and function of the human body. The course consists of four lecture hours and one three hour lab per week; the lab is intended to supplement the lecture and offer the opportunity to observe the structures and functions discussed in lecture. This course is intended for students pursuing careers in health occupations, or as an elective course for other majors. This course is transferable as an equivalent to introductory human anatomy and physiology at other colleges and universities, and can be used as a science general education requirement. There are no required prerequisites, but it is recommended to take Bio 10 or other Bio course prior to enrollment. A basic understanding of biology, chemistry and math are necessary for success in this course.

Cadavers will be observed in lab. Cadavers are preserved with formaldehyde, which is a mild mutagen. Although exposure is minimal, students who are pregnant should discuss this with their physician.

Expected Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify selected structures of the human body

2. List the organ systems of the human body and explain their functions

3. Relate the structures of the human body to their functions.

4. Develop basic laboratory and dissection, skills which can be utilized in further investigations.

5. Apply knowledge of structure and function learned at one level or system to other levels or systems.

-Please note that this point system is tentative and may change slightly.

-As per college policy, students missing one more class hour than the unit value of the course may be dropped. (However, it is your responsibility to drop the class (either through admissions, in person or by telephone.) You are responsible for all material covered in class. If you foresee missing more than one or two days of class, please inform me.

-Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual, or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, or the Disability Resource Center

-Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity. Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for

dismissal. This further discussed in the Student Handbook. Expected conduct during examinations is discussed in the last page of this handout.

Special Concerns:

Students with special needs such as hearing and/or vision impairment should make arrangements with the instructor.

ADA Accommodation Statement: Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, or the disabled Student Service Office.

Procedure for Examinations

Please read these guidelines and sign the next page. Your instructor will keep the signature page. Keep this page for your reference.

The following standards will be enforced during the giving and taking of examinations:

1. All examinations will have an instructor in the room at all times.

2. There will be absolutely no talking during an exam.

3. If a student has a question about the test, he/she is to raise his/her hand and at the instructor's acknowledgement, come to the instructor to ask the question. The instructor will answer only non-substantive questions. The information given to the individual student will then be made available to the entire class if it is deemed relevant by the instructor.

4. Books, papers, coats and other personal articles are to be placed away from the workspace during an examination. Cell phones are to be turned off prior to the examination.

5. It is the responsibility of each student taking the examination to position him/herself so that he/she is as far away from other students as possible, so that the papers of other students are not visible. Eyes shall be focused on examination at all times during examination.

6. It is the responsibility of each student to monitor his/her behavior so that the possibility of personal suspicion is minimal.

7. If a student's behavior during an exam is deemed suspicious, the instructor will immediately collect the student's examination papers and an alternative examination will be given at a later time. Evidence of cheating on exams is grounds for student's dismissal for unprofessional conduct.

8. After the student has completed the examination, he/she is to leave the room immediately and silently, taking his/her personal belongings with him/her. The student is not to wait outside the classroom, but is to leave the area, so as to not disturb students who are still taking the examination.

I have read and agree to abide the guidelines set forth in this procedure statement and by the guidelines set forth in the college catalogue.
