Human Growth and Development

*Course Description:
Human growth and development course is designed to provide a basic knowledge of the nursing care of individual from conception through death.
This course examines the physiological, psychological and cognitive aspects of human growth and development throughout the life span, with special reference to application of the need for individualized health care.
Although the emphasis is on normal growth and development, the course includes sections on anticipatory guidance of health and development problems common to that phase of the life span.
*Course Objectives:
Upon completion of the course the students will be able to:
Explain the developmental theories of Piaget. Erickson and Freud.
Discuss the principles and factors influencing on growth and development.
List the developmental screening and assessment tools used with children.
Identify the influence of the child’s level of growth and development on the occurrence and prevention of accidents.
Teach parents to recognize normal growth and development periods to assist them to have realistic expectations of accidents.
Describe common growth and development characteristics for each age group.
Discuss the developmental aspects of human reproduction.
Apply knowledge of human development to other academic fields and how to live in current society.
Plan for nursing management and to help in formulating the plan for the total care of each child.

**Evaluation:
-Participation and Assignment: 20%
-Midterm Exam: 30%
-Final exam: 50%

*Stages of growth and development:
-The newborn (Neonatal) -The infancy
- The toddler - The preschooler
- The school age child - the adolescence
- The young adult - The Middle-Aged adult
- The young older adult - The aged adult
*Each stage will be studied separately for the following issues:
*Physical development * Psychosocial development *Cognitive development * Language development
*Moral development * Spiritual development
*Common health and development problems.
