5 Simple Steps for Applying to College

1. Decide on 5 colleges that you would like to apply to

• Visit the website

• Read about programs that interest you (i.e. culinary arts, business)

• Make sure your GPA/test scores match up with the school requirements

TIP: You may want to apply to 3 different types of schools

• “Reach” Schools - Most students here have higher test scores and GPA”s. You have a 25% chance of being admitted

• “Just Right or MATCH” School s- Your GPA and test scores fall in the median range of students at the university

• “Safe” Schools – Your GPA and test scores are higher than most students that attend

2. Apply Online

• Read the instructions: When is the application due? Do I need to write a personal essay? Do I need to get any recommendation letters from my teachers/counselor?

• If you have to apply using a paper application, answer the questions neatly and in black ink and you must prepare your envelopes to be mailed.

• Address envelope to the Admissions office of your school

• Place stamps in the upper right hand corner of envelope (3 stamps minimum)

• Place all materials in the appropriate size envelope (application, letters of recommendation, personal statement essay, check/money order, etc)

• Drop off your envelope to your counselor in the Counseling office to be mailed no later than November 21st.

TIP: Need assistance filling out your application? Visit your Counselor or go to the College Lab

TIP: If you apply to a college online, print the completion page and give a copy to your counselor to serve as verification of completion.

Remember that all Kenwood Seniors are REQUIRED to apply to a minimum of 5 schools and submit proof of 1 acceptance letter in order to participate in Senior activities, such as graduation, prom, etc…

3. Order your transcripts through

• Create an account through the and have your transcript sent electronically.

• ACT/SAT scores can be faxed or sent by you electronically through your account. If a school requests an Official copy of your ACT score you must request your score to be sent through .

• Transcripts are free to all Participating Parchment schools. All other transcripts will be processed electronically for $2.55.

• Students who receive free/reduced lunch qualify for a fee waiver that will waive the fee for up to FOUR non-participating schools.

TIP: Order your transcripts after you have completed your online undergraduate application for admission. Transcripts that are sent electronically will process within 24 hours.

TRANSCRIPTS FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS ARE FREE and must be requested through the College Lab.

TIP: If you apply to a college online, print the completion page and place in an envelope…this will be mailed by your counselor to the college along with your transcripts.

4. Apply for Scholarship Money!!!!

• Get organized and make time to visit the College Lab during your lunch period at least once a week to review the CPS Scholarship Guide.

• Kenwood’s post secondary team will offer scholarship acquisition workshops after school in the College Resource Lab. Please check the website for dates.

• Attend as many College/Scholarship fairs as possible.

5. Apply for FINANCIAL AID no later than FEBRUARY 1ST!!!

• Visit the FAFSA website to retrieve your PIN# (electronic signature), you and your parent will need this to complete your financial aid application online.

• Gather materials for the FAFSA , you will be able to file your online application as early as January 1, 2015

• Find a time to sit down with your parents to complete the form

TIP: Our Post Secondary Department, led by Ms. Hunter offers financial aid assistance workshops after school periodically throughout the school year, starting in the month of October. Bring your parent/guardian and get the help you need with this important document!
