Meet Mrs. WhitehurstI was born in Winter Haven, FL, but was reared in Gainesville where I attended school, KG-12th grade, and then the University of Florida where I received my Bachelors of Science Education in Biology Education. Go Gators! I am certified in Middle School Science, High School Biology and Educational Leadership/ Principalship.I am married to Forrest Whitehurst, a native of Panama City and an English Teacher in the AICE program at Bay High School. We have five children. Our eldest, Susan Harrison, works in labor and delivery at Gulf Coast Hospital and may have delivered many of my 2016 students. Number two, Terri Boone, lives in South Carolina where she and her husband own a hunting lodge. Third is Sallie Brosnan who will be a first year teacher at St. John Catholic School this year. Forrest, our son, works for Pointtrade, and works with companies who import/export commodities. The baby, Kathryn, works in Washington DC for Representative Babin, who is from Texas. We have eight grandchildren. If you have time, I’d love to talk with you about them and show you pictures….they’re all over my classroom. While in Gainesville I worked in entomology research studying insect pheromones, trying to find biological solutions for pest control. Additionally, I worked in neuroscience research, specifically trying to determine why the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) doesn’t heal. I am intrigued by research and hope to foster inquiring minds.I started teaching at BHS in 1993 where I taught Biology, Physical Science, Oceanography, Anatomy & Physiology, Algebra I and Honors English I. In 2004, after receiving my Masters in Educational Leadership from FSU (Go Noles!) I moved to Arnold High School to be the Assistant Principal for Guidance and Curriculum. After four years I transferred to Tommy Smith and later Hiland Park Elementary Schools. For the last two years I have been the principal at Deer Point Elementary School. Believe me, I am eager to return to the classroom and to teaching SCIENCE.I look forward to being a part of the highly respected science team at SMS. ................
