Introduction

There is a wide range of offers of software for simulating systems. The purpose of simulating is to avoid mistakes or unfulfilling of specifications before prototyping and/or delivering the built system. The reason is not any other than the costs of the physical implementations. Also, a hydraulic system must not be considered isolated from other systems, such as pneumatics or electrics. In Mechatronics, hydraulics is usually embedded into a superior system that involves, as said, pneumatics and electrics-electronics.

The simulation software gives us not only the opportunity of testing without building the system. It also permits the designers to implement different technologies in a same system (usually called Mechatronic Systems).

In this session, we are going to start a new project using a SIMULATION software: Automation Studio.

The goal of this Unit is to prepare the environment necessary to simulate properly a hydraulic system. In the following dialog box you can find the links to the home page of Automation studio (TM), where you can acquire a software license:

Creation of a Project

First of all the Automation Studio application must be run. There, in the Help Menu, you can find the User’s Manual, in English. Please, download it as a PDF file.

The next step is to open the User’s Guide, Chapter 4. There you can find the following instructions:

Choose File → New Project

What is a Project?

A Project is a file that allows us to develop a complete system based on various technologies. Those can be Pneumatics, Hydraulics, Electronics, etc. In this unit we will only focus on Hydraulic Systems. In spite of this, the fact is that we can also implement a PLC automation for controlling the Hydraulic System.

A Project is composed of “Documents”. They are the following:

Diagrams

SFC (GRAFCET)

Report

External Document

Folder

Web Page

In Unit 4, we are only going to implement a set of 2 “Diagrams”.

Saving the Project.

The path to be followed is

Select File → Save Project as

[pic]

And, as will be repeated in further lines, the name must be coded as :

YYMMDD_SURNAME_MP0403

Project Properties.

We have to set the details of the Project in order to establish its main characteristics.

Choose File → Project Properties

[pic]

As can be seen, it is distributed within 3 fields:

General

Summary Info

History

Please, follow the teacher’s instructions to fulfil the fields requested.

Creating a Diagram

Diagrams are a type of Document of the Project. Its properties must be set through the edition tools (Editing).

Go to “User’s Guide”, chapter 5.

There you must follow the instructions to modify the settings of the Diagram:

Diagram Page Setup

Specifically, the “Map Locator” must be set in order to obtain a layer as shown in the figure:

[pic]

Following instructions on page 82:

1. Choose Edit → Document Properties → Page Setup.

2. Enter or modify the various fields in the dialog box.

3. Click on the Apply button to validate.

4. Click on the Close button to return to your diagram.

Especially the fields indicated on page 83 must be filled:

Creating your own Project

Finally, following the teacher’s instructions, you must create a Project. The name of the Project must be coded as follows:

YYMMDD_SURNAME_MP0402

The Project must contain only one Diagram, configured as has been shown in the lines above.

The purpose is to have at least one Project with a Hydraulic Diagram.

Running a Simulation.

The teacher will show you an example of how to implement and simulate a basic hydraulic system. Because of this, the symbols will be extracted from the Hydraulic Library.

Example (20 minutes):

Simulate a simple effect cylinder that will extend and retract.

After that, you must reproduce the following scheme by yourself in a new Diagram of the same Project:

Exercise 2 (120 minutes):

Simulate the circuit to limit the pressure to a simple effect cylinder by using a Pressure Reducing Valve, using the software recommended by

the teacher and following the basic scheme taught in the previous Unit 3.
