1. Introduction

Like most technologies, hydraulics has its own codes and designs. In order to draw the schemes of the hydraulic systems, a set of symbols must be standardized.

Some standards have been developed through the XX century for achieving this purpose. The most important and used nowadays are:

NFPA

ISO

In the following link, we will introduce the basic symbols for hydraulic systems. After that you will work in pairs in order to solve two exercises. The goal is to work on the symbols of hydraulics and to draw basic schematics.

2. How to use Vickers Manual

The Manual is composed of 13 chapters. In the last chapter #13, you can find the main basic circuit configurations. It is a real, tested and reliable set of systems that involves simple hydraulics to electro hydraulics.

Symbols used are not the standard shown in the link Symbols notes. That is useful because it will help to better understand the schemes, as the student feels obliged to compare and to highlight the differences.

Finally, as it is a worldwide used handbook, it is reasonable to start using it.

3. Exercises proposed

Therefore, the following exercises must be solved with the help of the teacher and the resources linked above:

Exercise 1 (60 minutes):

Draw the basic schematic of a basic hydraulic circuit in which a hydraulic cylinder will extend and retract .You must use the Vickers

Manual, chapter 13, in order to seek which configuration would be used.

Compare the symbols used in the manual against the ones used by the ISO standard. Can you see differences? Please, indicate these differences

to your teacher.
