T he follow ing are general guidelines for the consum ption of over the counter m edications. [For m ore details and sources,

see our article at osherO T C , starting on the second page. For FA Q s or to ask a question see

osherFA Q ].

1. Pill m edications that one sw allow s are perm itted even if they contain non -kosher ingredients. T w o exceptions to that

rule are:

V itam ins ¨C In m ost cases vitam ins do not qua lify as m edicine, and instead are treated as food supplem ents w hich

require hashgachah . If a doctor prescribes a specific vitam in w hich is not kosher certified, please review your

specific situation w ith your doctor and R abbi. A n ex ception is that m ultivitam ins and prenatal m ultivitam ins w hich

are in tablet form are acceptable even if they are not kosher -certified. T his exception does not apply to (a) Pesach,

(b) sim ilar products in chew able, liquid, or gelcap, or (c) tablets w ith ju st one or tw o vitam ins in them .

G elcaps ¨C G elcaps (hard or soft) should only be taken by som eone w ho is ill and does not have any alternative

m edicine that is free of kashrus concerns.

2. L iquid and chew able m edication that contains kosher -sensitive ingredients should only be used under the direction of a

doctor and R abbi, w ho w ill judge the severity of the illness, the likelihood that the m edicine is non -kosher, and the

possibility of substituting an alternative w hich is free of kashrus concerns.

3. Please consult your R abbi for the law s of taking m edicine on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

4. D o not discontinue the use o f any m edicine w ithout consulting w ith your doctor and R abbi.

5. T his list is for year round use and does not include inform ation for P esach.

6. T his inform ation on this list is update d regularly . T his edition should not be used after D ecem ber 31, 2024.
