Additional notes from Peter McKinley

The fifteen hymn tunes and chants are those which have been listed in Christopher Palmer’s biography of Howells. They do not include the further 6 more hymns and 7 chants which are listed in “Grove on line”. The seven chants are [a] 4 from the late Dr Lionel Dakers manuscripts and [b] 3 from John Birch’s.

Note from the Hon. Secretary

Howells wrote a set of three chants for Psalm 106 for Dr John Birch, when he was Professor of Organ at the Royal College of Music, and Organist of Chichester Cathedral. These are in manuscript form only, and have not – so far as I am aware – been published. I have used them on several occasions at services in Westminster Abbey. ARM
