The Gathering Storm

Sunday, 30 May 2010

The film opens in 1934 with Winston Churchill (Albert Finney) deep in his wilderness years, and struggling to complete his

biography of his ancestor the Duke of Marlborough, which he hopes will revive his fortunes. Winston is chided by his wife

Clemmie (Vanessa Redgrave) for their lack of money and is aware that as a 'man of destiny' his moment may have passed. At the

same time he struggles in the House of Commons as a backbencher to get a hearing for his concerns about German rearmament under

Hitler and the policy of appeasement.

Churchill is also disappointed by the behaviour of his son Randolph Churchill (Tom Hiddleston), which leads to further arguments

with Clemmie, who announces she is leaving to go on an extended overseas trip. Churchill is devastated and throws himself into

his pet activities: painting, and building walls around the family house. Clemmie eventually returns, and the couple are

reconciled.

During the same period, a young official in the government, Ralph Wigram (Linus Roache) has become concerned about the growth of

the German Luftwaffe (air force), and is convinced by his wife to leak information about it to Churchill.

Shortly afterwards, Churchill uses Wigram's information to launch an attack on Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin (Derek Jacobi).

With Churchill's fortunes restored, the narrative jumps forward to September 1939, with the declaration of war against Germany

at the start of World War II, and the announcement that Churchill will be taking over command of the Royal Navy again as First

Lord of the Admiralty. An impatient Churchill bids farewell to the staff at the country house, and travels to London. Arriving

in the middle of the night at the Admiralty, Churchill is met by a Royal Marine corporal who informs him the fleet have already

been signalled that ‘Winston is back’, to which Churchill replies, “He bloody well is!”

Compass: The Mission: Part 1

Sunday, 30 May 2010

The Mission is a four-part documentary series by the team who produced the extremely popular series The Abbey for Compass. The

Mission is the story of missionaries in reverse, as three young Nigerian Catholic priests, who haven’t volunteered, who have

never left Africa before, are sent to save Tasmania’s struggling Church. But can they fulfil The Mission?

The series follows the young missionary priests as they travel from Equatorial Africa, Nigeria to Australia’s island State,

Tasmania. We journey with them from their arrival on Hobart’s coldest winter day, to their assignments in the remote corners of

the state. It’s a rollercoaster ride of faith, dedication and culture shock. Follow the missionaries from day one of their

three-year mission, to the end of their first year in Tasmania. Never before has the Catholic Church allowed such access to the

behind-the-scenes world of the missionary, both in Nigeria and Australia.

In episode one, Fathers Christopher, Felix and Kene arrive in Tasmania on its coldest winter’s day. Fr Brian takes us behind the

scenes into the Catholic priesthood as he welcomes the three Nigerian missionaries into his Presbytery, where they’ll stay for

their first four weeks.

It’s a whirlwind of ‘enculturation’ Tassie style as the three young Fathers encounter Tasmanian Devils, colonial villages,

snowfields, and the even colder reality of elderly congregations in largely empty churches with an aging local priesthood. The

first four weeks are up and Tasmania’s Archbishop Doyle sends the Nigerian Fathers off to work with his overstretched Aussie

priests.

Talking Heads: James Reyne

Monday, 31 May 2010

“Don’t worry, we know you’re famous.” These are words that have almost come to haunt James Reyne.

Fans of the very successful band, Australian Crawl, don’t just remember Reyne as the band’s lead singer, they still see him in

that role.

Australian Crawl was Australia’s most popular band in 1981 and their first album, with its title single Boys Light Up, sold five

times platinum. Their second album Sirocco topped the Australian charts and their hit song, Reckless, is still one of the most

requested songs on Australian radio. In fact, during the 80s Australian Crawl sold over one million albums in Australia.

But, as James Reyne makes clear to Peter Thompson on Talking Heads, the band broke up in 1986, almost a quarter of a century

ago! He cringes at footage from those heady early days and says even at the time, he couldn’t believe how singing a couple of

silly old songs could take him so far.

“I never thought Australian Crawl was more than a pub band”, he says.

A prolific songwriter and student of music, Reyne would go on to record 10 solo albums. His most recent album, TCB, is a

collection of songs previously associated with Elvis Presley.

So how did he make that journey from an 80s rock star (with a dodgy voice) to a highly accomplished composer, musician and

singer... with a farm on the side? And why do those pesky fans refuse to move with the times?!

Thompson’s interview with Reyne will reveal all.

making a true biryani.

With fish being central to most Bengali dishes, he is invited for lunch by a local family to sample the country’s traditional

dish of fish dampokht. Heading north to Sylhet, Rick explores the city’s close links to British curry houses and visits a Khasi

village close to the Indian border for an unforgettable pork and black sesame seed curry.

Grand Designs Revisited: Clapham

Thursday, 3 June 2010 New Series

David and Anjana’s tiny coach house was proving too small for them and their children, so they decided to build a new house in

their own garden, which was big by London standards.

But their grassy plot of land came with a few problems. It was overlooked by a huge block of flats and in the middle of the

block stood a chestnut tree they weren’t allowed to cut down.

David and Anjana came up with an inspired solution: they decided to build a curved house along the borders of their block, and

they decided to do most of the work themselves. But from the beginning there were major issues which caused delays and a budget

blow-out.

Two and a half years after he first met David and Anjana, Kevin returns to see their finished avant-garde house.

the alien planets of our own solar system.

Got time for a 24-year holiday? Then consider a journey to our most distant and least explored planets, the ice giants Uranus

and Neptune. There’s only ever been one Earthly visitor into this ‘chill zone’, the Voyager mission, launched in 1977. What

The American Future: A History By Simon Schama: American War

Thursday, 3 June 2010

Turning to fascinating moments in American history to understand the present, Simon Schama reveals how the American attitude to

war is different from what outsiders assume it to be.

“The world has got in the habit of thinking of America as the tough-guy empire; trigger-happy cowboys addicted to the rush of

military power. But that’s not the way America sees itself,” he says.

Two of the founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, disagreed about whether America should even have a

professional army – a division still evident when Schama visits America’s premier military academy at West Point.

From the Civil War right through to Mark Twain’s denunciation of President Teddy Roosevelt’s imperial adventure in the

Philippines, American wars have inspired profound debate. And nowhere more so in the 2008 election than San Antonio, Texas,

nicknamed Military City because of its high population of veterans and serving soldiers, where Schama finds feelings about the

war are deeply divided.

As with the great war elections of the past, it’s a debate which forces America to dig deep and rediscover what it stands for.

Poh's Kitchen

Give your guilty conscience a night off! Tonight on Poh’s Kitchen it’s all about indulgence. It’s luxurious, pleasure-seeking and decadent and the health police will hate it.

Poh and her friends join the crowds at the Fringe Festival Street Party and Parade where tens of thousands of party lovers frock up for a night of fun. Afterwards Poh and party head off to a chocolate dessert restaurant to indulge in a few guilty pleasures. This inspires Poh to invite French chef Emmanuel Mollois back to her kitchen to cook some ‘really special occasion’ recipes.

Poh cooks an Indonesian layer cake – a cake that’s a real labour of love because it’s grilled layer by layer and includes 15 egg yolks. The end result is spectacular.

Emmanuel cooks deep sea bream in clay – a process he learnt as a chef in Paris. This healthy dish is simply steamed with subtle herbs in its own juices but Emmanuel pairs it with the most decadent mashed potato anyone is ever likely to taste because the recipe calls for 500 grams of butter. But when Poh tastes it she says she thinks she has died and gone to heaven. Emmanuel did warn her to call her doctor before the show.

Poh also visits her Aunty Lynda and her friends, affectionately referred to as ‘the girls’ - a group of women who love talking about, cooking and eating food. They have each brought a plate of traditional Malaysian kuiy (pron: kway) intricately-made desserts that are real special occasion creations.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, June 03 at 6:00pm

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors showcases bright minds from across the country as they discover ingenious solutions to the problems of our lives. Inventions featured on the program:

DELIVER-E TRIKE – by inventor Simon William from TAS

Simon William is a method inventor. When he set out to develop an electric bike for postal workers he wasn't content designing the invention from afar. Instead, Simon became a postie for 18 months in the hilly suburbs of Hobart, facing some of the most challenging terrain for a postie anywhere in Australia. On every run, a postie will make around 500 deliveries over 3½ hours. In the city posties will often walk, but out in the suburbs they’re bringing your mail on a motorbike.

The Deliver-E Trike is a specially designed electric bike for postal workers. It is a three-wheeled all terrain vehicle ensuring stability at low speeds. The bike is also designed to tilt, so that posties can lean in close to mailboxes while making their deliveries. Best of all, the Deliver-E Trike is electric, so it is clean, green, and quiet.

EVESTG – by inventors Brian Lithgow and Jayashri Kulkarni from VIC

Central Nervous System disorders such as depression, schizophrenia and ADHD cost over $2 trillion globally every year and affect one in four people in their lifetime. Correctly diagnosing mental illness is a massive problem worldwide, which in itself causes great and often unnecessary distress to sufferers who are left without a diagnosis and treatment.

EVestG is a revolutionary new diagnostic technique that measures the patterns of electrical activity in the brain’s vestibular, or balance system, allowing doctors to dramatically fast-track the detection of mental and neurological illnesses. Developed at Monash University, this breakthrough invention has the possibility to fundamentally change the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness worldwide.

PUSH N GLIDE – by inventor Graham Remnant from NSW

Most of us don't even notice when we walk over rough or steep ground, we’re lucky enough to have all-terrain feet without even realising. But for people in a wheelchair there will always be terrain that wheelchairs are not equipped to handle. Wheelchair users are also at risk of many other injuries from pushing the chairs, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lacerations, injured hand and shoulder joints, torn ligaments, and blistering, just to name a few.

The Push n Glide is a completely new wheelchair design. Rather than propelling the chair with the wheels, the invention uses two handles to move forward and reverse. The handles are angled for a natural and easily maintained action that is not stressful to wrists or shoulders. The design also provides more power, allowing the user to propel the chair across terrain that was previously impossible for wheelchairs to tackle.

Land Speed Record

In 1898 the land speed record stood at just 63 kilometres per hour. Today it’s 1,223 km/h. Roscoe McGlashan wants to go even faster. Graham Phillips travels to Perth, at a somewhat slower pace, to kick the tyres of the jet powered vehicle Roscoe used in his 1996 record attempt, and checks out his latest dream machine – powered by a rocket! The rocket will carry two and a half tonnes of hydrogen peroxide that will provide the thrust that Roscoe believes will propel the car to its target speed of 1,600 kilometres an hour.

Green Buildings

Over 40 percent of all waste produced in Australia comes from building construction and demolition. About 6 million tonnes of waste is sent to land fill each year. But what if we were to recycle buildings? Tanya Ha finds out what a life cycle analysis of a building is, and how a new type of greener cement is set to replace the traditional form of the most commonly used building material.

Toxic Sediments

Environmental reform and the introduction of offshore sewage outlets have improved the quality of Australian waterways including Sydney Harbour. But, beneath the surface sparkle and shine lurks a dark menace that renders bottom feeding fish like mullet dangerous to eat. Mark Horstman reports on the deadly toxins that continue to enter Australia’s most famous harbour – every day.

Crayfish Attraction

What do crustaceans put behind their ears to attract a mate? For crayfish the answer is as simple as taking a tinkle. Females illicit male mating behaviour by urinating, but the urine also provides a chemical signal to encourage aggressive behaviour. The female provokes fights with males to weed out the weaklings and ensure that only the strongest males will sire her progeny.

Doc Martin

It's business as usual for Dr Martin Ellingham even though it's his wedding day. He opens the surgery to a stream of patients including one of the bridesmaids. Louisa Glasson's best friend Isobel is heavily pregnant and has an injury to her eye that will require her to wear an eye patch - not a good look for the bridal party.

Meanwhile Martin manages to offend the vicar, who then has a terrible accident and a replacement is needed - with just three hours to the ceremony. Martin does a deal with a retired cleric: he will do the marriage ceremony if the Doc will examine his sick pig.

Less than an hour before proceedings are to start, Isobel goes into labour and Martin is called to deliver. Then it's a race against time for Martin and Louisa to get to the church. Dressing in their respective homes, they reflect on the commitment they are about to make.
