Setting Goals and Trusting God’s Word – A Biblical Prospective

Front Nine:

When setting set short and long term goals in golf but life as well it is important to look to Gods word in developing and achieving those goals. The Word of God is the best instruction book for you use, call it your Goal Setting Yardage Book. A guide to navigate the decision making process just like a yardage book helps you navigate the shot making process. As we walk this journey called life we all need to set goals, realistic goals for the things we want to achieve. Remember that God may have a different plan than you do so be prepared to change and follow his direction. Here are some things to consider when setting goals and remember to follow the word to help navigate your goal setting.

Back Nine:

A. By putting God first his word promises you can achieve the goals you set.

Luke 12:31 “Seek ye first the kingdom of Heaven and these things will be given to you as well”.

B. Remember that God’s word will be a guide for your life:

Psalm 119-105 “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”.

C. God’s word will give you stability and light your path as you walk through your life:

Proverbs 18:10 “The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth unto it, and is safe”.

D. Remember that God’s word is your strength when making decisions:

Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid”?

E. We all look for role models and people to look up to, imitate or even try and be as great as them. Tiger Woods wanted to be better than Jack Nickalus. You may want to be as great as Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, or even Michael Jordan and you may look up to them. My 11 year son really looks up to me and I like that. I always let him know that daddy is human and I will make mistakes and let him down from time to time. I always tell him if he going to look up to there is one thing for certain. Jesus will never let us down, he will lead us where he needs us to be, help us set goals and make decisions, and he is the best example for you to imitate your life after is Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:21 “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for YOU, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps”.

Practice Range:

1st Do This

Write down your goals – Remember to take them before the Lord in prayer. We must realize that God wants us to have the desires of our hearts. Psalm 37:4 – “Delight thyself in the Lord: and he shall give you the desires of your heart” Matthew 21:22 – And all things, whatsoever you shall ask for in prayer, you shall receive.

Remember These 4 Things

I. People may tell you that your goals are too lofty. That it will be hard to achieve them. Remember David and Goliath. Protected by God and with a sling and a stone he defeated the giant when everyone doubted him. 1 Samuel 14: Read all of this Chapter – verse 50: So David triumphed over the Goliath with a sling and stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down Goliath and killed him.

II. God has a plan for you. God wants to help you not harm you and he also wants you to prosper and grow. He will listen and help you when you seek him with all your heart. Jeremiah 11-13. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

III. Phillipians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Always remember that through Christ’s strength we can move mountains.

IV. When no one else believes in you and you feel no one cares, remember that Jesus Christ your Heavenly Father does. Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He believed and cared about you enough that he gave his own life for you.
