Giving Thanks to God

Basil Marotta Jericho Ministries

Session Outline: Why should we give thanks to God?

There is a relationship between thanksgiving and victory.

So, regardless of your present circumstances, give thanks to God for things you have not yet seen.

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. (2 Cor 2:14)

But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Cor 15:57)

Be joyful always; {17} pray continually; {18} give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Th 5:16-18)

Life Implication: Are you consumed with….

What you don’t know or see…What you don’t have…What you can’t do…What someone else hasn’t done for you?

Or…. I can do everything through him who gives me strength. (Phil 4:13 NIV)

God has called us to a life of love and thanksgiving…Do you only thank God for things He has done (past things), or do you also thank God for what He is going to do (future things)?

There is no place between giving thanks and not giving thanks…Giving thanks is giving glory to God. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. {16} Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. (2 Cor 4:15-16 NIV)

So what does being thankful involve?…

1. Be grateful…recognize and acknowledge what God has done in your life… Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, {9} for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. (Psa 107:8-9)

2. Remember…what God has done Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits-- {3} who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, {4} who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, (Psa 103:2-4 NIV)

3. Express it…verbally…say it and show it…not just think it…if you don’t chances are you will forget……."Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. (Mat 18:19 NIV)

Remember….

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4 NIV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Rom 8:28 NIV)

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Rom 8:37 NIV)

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, {9} for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. (Psa 107:8-9)

I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. (Psa 118:21)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. {7} And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:6-7)

For Discussion: Do you give thanks for future things as well as past things God has done?
