Unity is a unix based system that contains many programs. One of them is the elm mailer program that allows you to receive mail. Another

program in unity is the pico editor that allows you to enter and save text. The information below shou ld get your started with unity email.

TO LOGIN TO unity IN THE POE POWERMAC LABS:

using your mouse, click on the apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, and drag downward until you highlight the word

UnityEmail, ......then let go.

DO NOT USE YOUR MOUSE AGAIN, UNTIL YOU LOGOUT! IT WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY!

***NOTE: unity is case sensitive, so do all your typing in LOWER CASE. *****

at the prompt SunOS UNIX (cc00du.unity.ncsu.edu)

login:

type in your userid and press return. If you have never logged in before, your userid is most likely to be your first and middle initials, plus the

first 6 letters of your last name (NO EMBEDDED BLANKS). (Depending on how common your name is, you may have been assigned a

different userid. Check with me).

at the Password: prompt type in your password and press return. Initially your password is your social security number. After logging in,

you should get a screen similar to the following:

TO RUN THE elm MAILER PROGRAM: (REMEMBER, DO NOT USE YOUR MOUSE!)

At the unity%: prompt type in the word elm

You should see a screen similar to the one in the box below which contains an index of messages. If this is the first time you have used the

elm mailer program, your mailbox may be empty and no messages may appear.

New messages have the letter N displayed beside them. Displayed at the bottom of the screen are some of the commands that you can

use in elm. Use the arrow keys to move up and down the list of messages.

Command:

In the box above, notice how each email message is listed one to a line. In each line you will see the following: the # of the message, the

date, the sender, and the subject.

In the box above, notice the commands displayed at the bottom of the box. Some of these commands are explained below. You can always

type in ? to see a display of help commands.

Selected Commands in the elm Mailer: (REMEMBER, DO NOT USE YOUR MOUSE)

press return to display a message

m to mail a message

r to reply to a displayed message

i to return to the elm index

d to delete a message

u to undelete a message

q to quit elm

c to change folders

? to access help

=received is the name of your old mail folder

! is the name of your new (inbox) mail folder

PLEASE PRESS THE RETURN KEY ONLY ONCE AFTER EACH COMMAND, AND

TYPE SLOWLY UNTIL YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE PROGRAM

TO MAIL A MESSAGE WITH elm:

at the Command: prompt

enter m

at the To: prompt

enter the complete email address of the person to whom you are sending the message, for example, esvasu@unity.nncsu.edu then press

the return key slowly once

at the Subject: prompt

enter the subject of the message (for example Next Meeting) then press the return key slowly once

at the Copies to: prompt

enter the complete email address of people to whom you wish to send a copy, if none don’t enter anything, then press the return key slowly

once

ACCESSING THE pico EDITOR

Pressing return accesses the pico editor which is similar to a wordprocessor. You should now have a blank screen in front of you

somewhat like the one below.

Type in your message here, using the delete key for corrections. To delete a whole line, press

Control-k.

When you are finished with your message. ...press Control-X

Follow the prompts...

File name to write:/tmp/snd.3363 press return slowly only once.

And now: Send

e)dit message, h)eaders, c)opy, i)spell, !)shell, s)end, or f)orget

Press s to send the message, or f to forget sending it. If you pressed S you should see:

Sending mail...

Note: Pressing Control-X and sending mail will result in you exiting the pico editor and returning you to the elm Mailer Main Index of

messages.

TO EXIT elm:

You can keep sending and reading mail as above. When you are finished and want to leave elm:

at the elm index screen, press q to quit elm.

If you want to leave all your mail in your inbox, at the prompt

Move read messages to “received folder (y/n)? press the n key

TO EXIT unity:

At the unity%: prompt enter logout to logout of unity.
