Forgot Your Password - University of South Florida

GEMS – Get a New Password

Have you ever forgotten your password in GEMS and had to call the Help Desk to have it reset?  GEMS now has a function to eliminate the need to call the Help Desk in those situations.  This function will email you a new password after the system has verified your identity.  However, to use this function, you will have to log into GEMS today and set up the question and answer that will be used to verify your identity.  Remember, the answer you type in today will be used to verify your identity in the event you ever forget your password.

To set up your account to use this feature, follow these steps:

1. Log into GEMSPRO using the following URL:

2. Go to Home>PeopleTools>Maintain Security>Use>My Profile

3. Under the “Password” section, click on the “Change or set up forgotten password help” link.  Choose a password hint question from the list or type in your own.  Then type the answer to the question you choose in the response box and click the Ok button.

4. Under the “Email” section type in the email address you want the new password sent to; this must be a USF address.

5. You are now set up to use the “Forgot your password?” link if you ever need it.

To use the Forgot Your Password function:

1. Click on the Forgot your password? link on the GEMS login page.

2. The Forgot My Password page will open.

3. Enter your User ID (e.g., JSMITH) and click the continue button.

4. Once the 'Email New Password' page appears, make sure the system is set to send the new password to the appropriate email address. If the appropriate email address does not appear, contact the Help Desk at 974-9000.

5. If the email address is correct, fill in the correct response to the user validation question and click the 'Email New Password' link.

6. Your new password will be emailed to you shortly.
