Dear Parents/Guardians:

I want to take this opportunity to welcome your student to the cast and/or position of crew head for Springfield High School’s fall drama event, The Holocaust: An Evening of Hope in the Face of Desperation. During the evening, we will highlight the work of SHS students in the areas of acting, writing, music, and cinematography as we focus on the theme of the Holocaust. This evening of educational theatre will also feature the play I Never Saw Another Butterfly, by Celeste Raspanti, which focuses on the children of Terezin, a stopping-off place for Jews on their way to Auschwitz. The play is an imaginative creation of one survivor’s story based on found documentary materials: poetry, letters, journals, diaries, drawings, and pictures. In addition to being in the cast, there are opportunities for students to be involved in the usual technical/backstage areas of theatre where all are welcome to assist as personal schedules allow.

A rehearsal schedule for the entire period has been developed based on students’ information provided at auditions and the requirements of the play. In order to achieve the performance goals that we have for this show, it is important that students be organized, plan ahead, and remain committed to the play. Additionally, students participating in this play should expect to participate in a highly rehearsed and polished production, demonstrate the willingness to have individual coaching in order to develop acting and backstage skills, and be committed to maintaining school eligibility. (grades, school behavior, chemical policies) Please note that the rehearsal schedule, revisions and news updates about the fall play will be sent periodically by e-mail; thus, it is expected that participants check their e-mail to read messages. I will also upload a copy of this letter and the main rehearsal schedule to my school web page.

Any questions or concerns should first be addressed student to director, followed by parent to director. It is always best to communicate about issues early so that the widest range of solutions is available. Please feel free to look over the theatre department’s program guidelines so that you are familiar with the educational philosophy of the activity. Finally, if there is a special way in which you can provide help or support to our program, please let us know. (Parents are invited to any “set-work” times!)

Sincerely,

Mrs. Neidt

Cheryl B. Neidt,

Director

PS: At this time, the school district and Springfield Community Theatre are working on a plan for a large-scale major musical production during the fall of 2015. Parents and their students will be welcome to audition for parts and/or work behind the scenes. Watch for details!
