HORSE HUMANE POLICY STATEMENT

I, ________________________________________, know that I am responsible for the care and welfare of my 4-H horse project animals. I promise to care for them

the right way as set by Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

I know that a healthy horse needs plenty of food, water, shelter and good health care. I know that it is my responsibility to provide that care. Even if the

weather is bad, I must care for my horse(s). If I am feeling bad, I must still take care of my horse(s). Before anything else, I must always take care of my

horse(s).

It is my duty to see that the horse(s) I raise are healthy.

I know that any horse used as a 4-H project must be trained and worked with before showing. I know and believe that cruel and mean training methods are not

used in Colorado 4-H horse programs.

I CARE ABOUT MY 4-H HORSE PROJECT ANIMALS!

BEGINNING INVENTORY

Beginning Inventory: List horse(s) equipment, feed, tack and/or supplies YOU OWN on the day your 4-H horse project begins (if this is a 4-H horse you have had for multiple years, use October 1 for your beginning date). Horses may be listed in beginning inventory or as an expense, but not on both pages. No matter where you list your horse, it must be accompanied by a beginning, or purchase, dollar value. You may add extra pages for beginning inventory items if necessary.

ENDING INVENTORY

Ending Inventory: List horse(s), equipment, feed, tack and/or supplies YOU OWN on the day your 4-H horse project ends (if this is a 4-H horse you have had for multiple years, use September 30 for your ending date). Horse(s) should be listed on ending inventory if you still have it or as in income ledger if you sold it, but not on both pages. Value of horse(s) listed in ending inventory shall be based on actual market value. No matter where you list your animal, it must be accompanied by an ending, or selling, dollar value. You may add extra pages for ending inventory items if necessary.

Do not put any items listed in the ending inventory into the income ledger. The income ledger should include only those items you have sold during this project year.

EVALUATION OF HORSE’S TRAINING AND YOUR RIDING

Use pages 16 and 17 to help you record (keep track of) the skills and abilities you and your horse already have and the ones each of you need to learn. These pages can also be used to help you set your goals for this year. You will learn more about your horse each year you are in the horse project. Your knowledge and riding skills, as well as the abilities your horse develops, should improve each year. To truly master these skills and abilities is a life-long endeavor. It is suggested that you ask your leader or some other horse person to help you decide which boxes you should check on these pages. The information on these pages can be useful in helping you decide when you are prepared to take the various level tests.
