Chandler High School - IB Physics

Instructor: Kirticia Jarrett E-mail: jarrett.kirticia@

IB Physics: This lab-oriented course is a rigorous preparation for the Standard level IB Physics test. The topics include Mechanics, Thermal Physics, Oscillations and Waves, Electromagnetic Waves, Electric Current, Fields and Forces, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, and Energy, Power and Climate Change. In this course students will be introduced to many different branches of physics and learn about the synthesis of the different branches. This course requires that the student is currently taking or has already taken pre-calculus.

Laboratory experiments are an integral component of this class (~25%) and are used to explore key concepts. Many units will begin with a lab where the students will be an integral part in the lab design process. You will be expected to decide what and how to investigate. You will be expected to keep an informal lab notebook in a carbonless copy lab notebook of all lab activities and applications. You will also be expected to write formal lab reports for many of the experiments that we do these should be kept in a binder to allow the student to have a permanent record of the labs they have done to help obtain college credit.

Textbook: College Physics, 6th Edition; Wilson, Buffa and Lou; Pearson/ Prentice hall

Methods of Assessment: Each Semester Grades will be based on the following: Labs, Homework, Classwork, Quizzes, Tests. Grades are calculated before the final as follows:

Labs: 35% Homework/Classwork: 15% Tests and Quizzes: 50%

Labs: Labs are very important in a college level science class. Labs develop critical thinking skills and allow students to develop their own ideas and understanding. Part of a student’s IB Physics score will be based on “internal assessment” which are rigorous lab reports based on labs that the students design and conduct individually. Other lab activities will be smaller teacher directed activities. You will receive two grades for the lab: a notebook grade and a report grade. Some lab activities will only be assessed in the lab notebook.

Lab Notebooks It is good scientific practice to keep up notes for personal reflection during all phases of the lab. Including pre-lab notes, data collection, and post-lab notes.

Labs Reports It is also good scientific practice to create a formal lab report. Every student is responsible for their own lab report. You will be responsible for writing up your lab report following the appropriate format and turn in two copies, one for me to grade and return to you, and one for me to keep.

Homework/Classwork We will regularly have homework and classwork worksheets and problems from the textbook. After working through the problems on your own we will then meet in groups of 2-3 students to whiteboard and present problems. I will stamp homework for completion on the day that it is due; without a stamp the homework is not worth any points. Homework will be turned in prior to the quiz on Wednesday.

Quizzes: We will have a quiz every block day. Some weeks the quiz will only be solving one problem. Some weeks the quizzes with be more substantial than others. Some quizzes you will work with a partner to do a practical quiz. For example, I may tell you the speed of two cars traveling toward each other, and you must find the location where they meet. If they meet at your location, then you earn an A.

Tests: We will have a test at the end of every unit. If we have a test in a week there will not be a quiz that week.

Final Exam (20%): There will be a final exam at the end of each semester. Since this is an IB/AP class, final exams are required for both semesters. The exam second semester may be a project-based final.

At the end of the semester grades will be calculated as follows:

Qtr 1: 40% Qtr 2: 40% Final: 20%

Required Materials:

➢ Carbonless Copy Lab Notebook (may be purchased in the bookstore)

➢ Scientific Calculator (should have sin, cos and tan), preferably a graphing calculator.

➢ Other normal classroom materials: pens, pencils, paper, student planner

Tardies:

Administration and Security will be sweeping students who are not in class on time.

If you are ‘caught in the sweep’ and you missed a quiz or a test:

• You must make up the quiz/test after school the same day in Mrs. Jarrett’s classroom or your test grade will result in a zero. You must show up to Room 801 right at the end of the school day to take the quiz/test.

If you are ‘caught in the sweep’ and an assignment or lab is given or checked in:

• You must make live contact with Mrs. Jarrett (an email or note does not count) the day you are swept to find out the given assignment and to check in the assignment from the previous class.

• You must show up to Room 801 right at the end of the school day to get/check in/ turn in assignments and make arrangements for a time to make up the lab.

• It is your responsibility to check with a classmate and get all relevant notes, examples, and/or homework corrections from the day you missed before the next class.

*These above procedures if you are caught in a sweep also apply for days spent in ISD, evening school, or if you are going on a field trip.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES:

*If you have an unexcused absence and an assignment is due, you will not get credit for any assignment due that day.

*These above procedures if you are caught in a sweep also apply for days spent in ISD, evening school, if you are going on a field trip or in an assembly.

Getting Help:

➢ My office hours are Monday and Wednesday from 2:15-3:15 in room #801. Please let me know if you plan to come in even during office hours as sometimes I have meetings scheduled during my office hours.
